Elvis´ hearing

Hi Sandy!

In the awful book by Albert Goldman, you can read that Elvis didn´t hear that good the last few years. According to that book Elvis had "the hottest stage sound in the business" (loud monitors to be able to hear). Of course, years of touring could damage any ears, but my question is: Is there any truth in this particular subject?

From what I remember, the Goldman book implied Elvis suffered a perforated ear drum in the army, and so claimed his hearing issues were longstanding. I don't believe it at all, as all of the musicians around Elvis through the 60's / 70's all say Elvis could hear the minutest of details, and pick up on them.

As for the Doc, type bigger, and he might be able to hear you! Nice one Doc!

I doubt Elvis' hearing was impaired in any fashion by his live act. You have to remember that his shows were neither heavy rock concerts nor particularly long. He also had good breaks to rest in between his tours. Maybe there was a slight "method in his madness" here.

I have played in different rock bands (not heavy metal) and the drums (especially a cymbal crash or different feedback noises are painful for the ears). If you watch the rehearsals fron TTWII, it must have sounded rather much from the drums etc.

I can´t decide if he only jokes with the Sweet inspirations on the import CD "Moody blue and other great performances" when he mess up the lyrics in "AYLT":

Sweets: "Does your memory stray"
Elvis: "I can´t hear you honey"
Sweets: "Does your memory stray"
Elvis: "Does yours?"

Perhaps Elvis was used to taking certain positions on the stage for some songs and with this one he came too close to the speakers/monitors. Just a guess.
