Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
Dylan is one of the few legends left who can do this sort of thing and really make it mean something.
Could this be the only time he's covered this classic?

V interesting...
Here's the clip (no real vison as such, but audio quality is fine)
It's not a bad version either ...
(depending what your expectations are. Mine aren't too high of Bob nowadays)
Bob Dylan, Heartbreak Hotel, Tahoe 16/8/09

Good version great tribute... Dylan really showing his class.
Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
Great that Bob Dylan is paying tribute to Elvis. Such a legend showing the respect that the media and Elvis haters do not. They prefer to ridicule Elvis and deny him the influence he had on the music world.

Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
Is Bob Dylan still living and the last of the Travelling Willbury's?
For some reason I thought Bob Dylan died a few years ago.
Dylan was on the news soon after George Harrison died.
I am not sure why Bob Dylan was on the news.
Any one know whatI am talking about?

Terrible? The Jonas Brothers are terrible. Dylan's dedication is something else altogether.

I like it!
Dylan's current rough gravel voice somehow fits perfectly with the lyrics. What an unpredictably wonderful artist. I saw him once in Werchter Belgium, and although he appeared smashed, I loved every minute of it, especially Highway 61. The crowd here (2009) didn't seem that enthusiastic about this tribute though, I don't think the average Dylan fan is an Elvis fan.
Dylan epitomizes (no matter what he thinks about it himself, not liking to be pigeon-holed) the liberal, free-thinking rebellious attitude of the 60s, while Elvis.. well, supported Nixon, didn't he ?

Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
I appreciate his motives and his respect for Elvis, and the backing was pretty cool. When I said 'terrible' I meant the vocal. For a long time he's been at the point where people make allowances for the shot voice because of the fact that he (rightfully) is deemed a music legend. The blunt truth is that his voice is gone. That doesn't detract from his past achievements and his place in the grand scheme of things, but it is true. As I've said before on here - fans who claim otherwise remind me a little of Elvis fans who in 1977 were claiming Elvis was in fine physical condition. It's called denial.drjohncarpenter wrote:Terrible? The Jonas Brothers are terrible. Dylan's dedication is something else altogether.

Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
Bob's voice fits most of the songs he sings very well. Is it pretty? No. But he's not out there singing torch ballads. Conversely, I can't see a guy like Tony Bennett trying to sing Dylan. It just doesn't fit the material. Sure, I wouldn't mind if his voice still sounded the way it did 35 years ago, but nobody's does.

Very sharp. I agree. By the way, I saw Dylan for the first time this year. Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
Think i'd be a bit disappointed with that set list from Bob
Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
Well, certain songs benefit better from a younger voiced Dylan (much of his 60s output), while others (like Not Dark Yet) are better suited for his current voice.
Heartbreak Hotel's raspy vocal actually benefits this version, I think. His voice is rough, but it is what it is, and I think he makes the best of it. It became more fitted for country blues mixtures and rockabilly material.
James Brown is another artist whose voice also got shot from the late 1970s on. It didn't prevent him from climbing onto that stage for 30 more years, which were largely forgettable music-wise, but hell, he entertained the crowds.

Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
Ummmmm, folks, Dylan is at a career height, has been for over ten years running now. He isn't past his prime at all. He actually is getting the best chart placings of his career at this point. Ya know, #1?? Even his album of outtakes from the three LP's before the last one was the most highly acclaimed CD of last year. Ya'll haven't noticed this?

Re: Bob Dylan paid tribute to Elvis: Sun August 16
It IS incredible how Dylan still is productive (and not only that, but brilliant in doing it) and getting splendid sales as well. I'm glad him and Johnny Cash got the respect they deserve, after both being lukewarm received in the 70s through to the first part of 90s. These guys are the best of the best.
