Is it possible that there are going to be two versions of "From Elvis In Memphis" (Legacy Edition)? Elvis Australia reported, after checking with Sony more than once, that it would be as originally advertised with the stereo tracks. Also, Amazon.UK shows it with the stereo tracks. As far as I know, only in the U.S.A. is it advertised with the MONO tracks. It wouldn't be the first time that a different version was released internationally.

Possibly but it would be a strange move. I just checked play.co.uk and hmv.uk and both are showing it with the mono tracks and they are also on Sony/Legacy's own site.

Claus is right . . .

On both the Legacy and Elvis The Music websites, they both mention the 10 mono single masters. For the record, I personally hope they are included as well, especially for the hit single version of "Suspicious Minds".

Okay, I have now had conformation from Sony that the Legacy list is definitely correct and we are getting the mono tracks. I don't know why there is no stereo version of Suspicious Minds.

As below ....

02. Only The Strong Survive
03. I’ll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms)

06. I’m Movin’ On
07. Power Of My Love
08. Gentle On My Mind
09. After Loving You
10. True Love Travels On A Gravel Road
11. Any Day Now
12. In The Ghetto

Bonus Tracks

13. I’ll Be There
14. Hey Jude
15. If I’m A Fool (For Loving You)
16. Who Am I?

Disc 2

The original ‘Back In Memphis’ album

01. Inherit The Wind
02. This Is The Story
03. Stranger In My Own Hometown
04. A Little Bit Of Green
05. And The Grass Won’t Pay No Mind
06. Do You Know Who I Am?
07. From A Jack To A King
08. The Fair’s Moving On
09. You’ll Think Of Me
10. Without Love (There Is Nothing)

Bonus Mono Singles

11. In The Ghetto
12. Any Day Now
13. The Fair’s Moving On
14. Suspicious Minds

If those singles all had dedicated mono mixes then I'll be happy to hear them and add them to my collection. If there are simple fold-downs in that list, then I don't really see the reason to include them as such.

All of Elvis' US singles were released in mono only up to 1971. Merry Christmas Baby may have been Elvis' first stereo single.

Remember radio was AM - mono - so singles were made for radio play in mono.

Not true!

Stuck on You
It's Now or Never
Are You Lonesome Tonight

All had original stereo single release.

KiwiAlan, yes you are correct, we overlooked that. Also Surrender was in Stereo.

There was definitely a mono release for each so they must have released in both stereo and mono, I guess fittingly to mark Elvis' first stereo recordings.

After this I do believe they kept to one mono release only.

Edit: So the answer to 'Mister Mike's' question, is yes they were 'dedicated mono mixes'.

And here are the ISRC's. Strangely enough, the ISRC's of the original FEIM tracks (Disc 1, Tracks 1-12) are identical to the ISRCs these tracks had on the 60's box set, I can only hope the mastering will be not!

RE the ISRC numbers I note that disc one on Amazon does not mention Digitally Remasterd whereas disc two does!

Ii's beginning to look like the original FEIM might not have had any special treatment since 1969.

Here is the mono mix of In The Ghetto. Notice the dry vocal and the slightly longer fade, making it a few seconds longer than the stereo mix.
This is a needledrop from the Worldwide 50. Gold Award Hits vol. 1 (German pressing).

It's pretty clear to me that a "Digitally remastered" designation is kind of an automated thing because only the 1969 tracks that have been registered as an ISRC in 1993 got it.

I really don't think that says much about the mastering though because the ISRC handbook is not really clear here:
4.1.3. No re-use
...
A new ISRC should be assigned whenever a recording has been re-issued in a revised or fully re-mastered form. Also see Section 4.9.1 Re-mixes / Edits / Session Takes and Section 4.9.10 Re-mastering.
4.9.6 Restoration of historical recordings
Re-mastering and editing technologies (including re-pitching, re-equalising, de-noising, de-clicking, etc.) offer many ways of processing historical recordings in order that they meet contemporary quality standards. When a full restoration of sound quality is carried out, the processed recording is to be considered a separate recording and thus obtain a new ISRC.
4.9.10 Re-mastering
When a track is re-mastered for the purpose of reproduction on a new carrier without restoration of sound quality (also see Section 4.9.1 Re-mixes / Edits / Sessions) , then no new ISRC is required. It is nevertheless the Registrant’s responsibility to decide where to draw the line between sound restoration (full re-mastering) and simple re-mastering.
It's certainly interesting that no new ISRCs have been assigned to the mono singles:
4.9.1 Re-mixes/ Edits / Session Takes
If multiple sound recordings are produced in the same recording session with or without any change in orchestration, arrangement, or artist and if they are preserved or turned into commercial products, each recording shall be encoded with a new ISRC. A new ISRC shall be given to each re-mix, edit or new version of a recording. It is recommended that the Registrant associate in its database the ISRC numbers of the original recordings used in the remixing.

We should all remember that the ONLY true hit version of Suspicious Minds is the mono one. When people were begging for the stereo of that song they realized that the overdubs were missing. So, they had te RECREATE the mono single in stereo. Meaning it is not the original version. So, I, for one, am very happy to get legitimate versions of the mono singles.

I don't think a single person in this thread has complained about the release of the MONO version of "Suspicious Minds." The consistent complaint has been that the Stereo version is not also included.

The final mono and stereo mixes were made and completed at the same overdub session in 1969. The main difference between the two is that since the original multitrack session tape was full the horns were dubbed live down to the final full track mono mix and then again live to the stereo 2-track master hence the mono and stereo mix feature different horn performances.

I wouldn't necessarily put too much stock in what's listed on Amazon. They've been wrong before. For instance their track listing for the 2008 upgrade of HGTA is now incorrect. At least on my last checking. This after having it CORRECT earlier.

I'm betting that Vic Anesini has done some work on the original 12 FEIM tracks.

I stand corrected about the track listing. It's now corrected. But if you really want to read a "review" that will grind your gears look up the 2008 listing for His Hand In Mine and read what's written under the headline "For Hardcore Fans Only."
Unbelievable.

Remember also that the masters were all worked in 2007. Those would be the ones we are getting on FEIM and BIM. What amazon has listed does not matter. They only have 18 tracks listed for disc 2.

I'll wager a bet that it'll be EVERY master in stereo and the bonus mono singles. That's how it will be. I'm sure.

I can confirm that the tracklisting is identical to the one in post 1 of the thread so there are no stereo mixes of Suspicious Minds, Don't Cry Daddy, etc.

It is an attractive package. IMO the following is the best audio source for the missing stereo tracks:

"Suspicious Minds" HitStory (U.S.A. edition);
"Don't Cry Daddy" Second to None;
"Kentucky Rain" Second to None;
"My Little Friend" Almost In Love (Complete Singles Collection [Japan]);
"Rubberneckin'" Almost In Love (Complete Singles Collection [Japan]);
"Mama Liked The Roses" Inspirational (Genre).
