It looks like Red West is also in uniform -- was in the Army at the same time as Elvis?
Did Red just happen to be home on leave at the same time as Elvis?

Red was enlisted in the Marines, while his pal Elvis was drafted into the army.
when asked why he was wearing his army duds at the session.
Elvis said that really he was proud of it,
plus the fact ELvis look awesome wearing it while on leave in Memphis.
many thaks for a another great post by davide.

Just found this image of what looks to be Elvis returning to Graceland on the night of May 31st 1958 after his drive from Fort Hood with his army buddy Rex Mansfield sat in the passenger seat. Picture Taken from 'Fans Star Library' 1959 (TCB-world)

A new image from the recording sessions
With thanks

Much improved image compared to the version that I originally posted, from a wire release. What's interesting from the 'Wire' information, is although no date is mentioned( I have June 2nd 1958),it does indicate that Elvis has yet to purchase the car. It was my impression that Elvis owned the car when the photo's were taken, hands up ,my mistake - which puts the previously mentioned purchase date of the 4th of June as possibly the correct one.

That's not a fender bass, you got it right though as a Dano.
The ones with Hank, Chet and Bob aren't from that session though, my guess is the others aren't either (floyd and Buddy). You left out DJ.
You are correct none of the pictures of the musicians are from the actual session(I will put a caption to state this).

This is an interesting photograph, due to the fact Elvis is holding and playing a six string fender bass, which looks to be a 1958 Silvertone 1303/U2 Danelectro Bass.
OK Thanks for the info

Great photo though, is it original or colorised?
I am sure it is original colour.

Thanks for the info on the DanoElectro.

Cool, I'm not sure whose it is either. I checked with Bob Moore (thanks for the pix btw) and he said it wasn't Hank's nor was the blonde/maple Kay bass on the floor behind Elvis Bob's. He thinks they might be the studio's instruments. Its odd that its plugged in unless Elvis is just trying it out because I doubt he played on any of the recordings. Surprising too that it would be there, they were relatively inexpensive guitars. The Sears version sold for about $69. There's only a couple of people I've known to use them professionally, Jimmy Page for one and Gary Tallent (a longhorn bass). Gary used to work at the factory, I remember him telling Seymour Duncan how the pickups were made.
As I mentioned, this is not a Fender nor is it a bass. Its just a 6 string guitar, DanElectro U1 or U2 as you mentioned (1 or 2 depending on number of pickups, only one visible). Sears sold Danos under their own name of "Silvertone" which would be written across the top of the headstock which it isn't.
OK, wait, I have to correct myself here. That's a Dan Electro Baritone guitar, not just a six string. Its like the six strin except it has a 30" scale length.

sorry about the quality
