TTWII COMPLETE WORKS vs TTW IT REALLY WAS

Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:38 pm

Can anybody comment on how much the content (audio/video, etc.,) was improved on (if at all) on the recently released TTWII Complete Works in comparison to the set That's The Way It Really Was-The Complete Outakes, released a couple of years ago?

It's like comparing GONE WITH THE WIND to it's teaser trailer.

I think both releases deserve a place in one's collection. The video on Complete Works has been extensively remastered to sharpen the picture/remove graininess and make the variable quality of the original angles look better in colour/depth/saturation, etc.
The Way It Should be is a compilation of complete outtakes gathered together nicely with accompanying cd sound. It was fantastic when first released but would probably be better today if Star redid it with the extra audio/video currently available.
Complete Works has 3 angle screens (so you see more angles at the same time on the tv screen-like Aloha/On Tour, etc) but the main widescreen angle is full size (unlike Aloha/On Tour where the pictures are smaller to accomodate the extra angles). Basically, Complete Works uses the black portions of the widescreen to add extra angle views. Audio is also excellent studio quality and synched to perfection. Since there was more studio quality audio available to Complete Works, there are lot more new video clips with excellent sound compared to The Way It Should Be.
In addition, Complete Works follows all the rehearsals and live shows in chronological order.
The Way it Should Be and Complete Works are very different in the presentation of the TTWII footage and in my opinion compliment each other.
As for the audios, for some reason, people have said that they are in mono, though they play in surround on my dolby digitial 2x system. Sound is excellent.
The book is beautiful (hard cover) and has a nice essay on the making of TTWII with some history behind the movie and also descriptions of the rare songs Elvis included in his stage repetoire (which you can then watch on the dvd).
Are they both worth buying? Of course.
If you want just one item with everything currently available, then Complete Works is the way to go. If you want just a sample of the outtakes, then The Way It Should be would be the answer.
