Gene Vincent
Gene Vincent died 37 years ago today.
He suffered a fatal burst stomach ulcer when aged 36.
Gene was a 1950's original rocker, having several hits in the Elvis-style including Be-Bop-A-Lula and Blujean Bop.
Many people [including Gladys Presley] thought that Be-Bop-A-Lula was by Elvis himself when it was first played on the radio.............
"I'm most like Elvis !"...... "No you're not, I am !..... "No, it's me for sure !" ......"But I got the voice !".... "Well I got the hair !"
... "Well I got the leather !" ..... "Elvis don't wear leather !" ..... "Oh, yeah, that comes later, don't it..."
Eddie Cochran & Gene Vincent argue it out in 1960.......................

Re: Gene Vincent
He (and Eddie Cochran) sure made some very fine music.
On stage they were less than nothing compared to Elvis.
It was a good thing they played a guitar, so you could
see the difference with the microfon-stand
Nevertheless, great music. I've got it all!!

Re: Gene Vincent
I came close to seeing Gene in '61/'62 but he never showed.
We got Tommy Bruce as a last-minute replacement.
Not quite the same though.....................................Tommy Bruce on his best behaviour....................

It was one of the Rock Across The Channel sea trips to France on the Daffodil.
We set off from Gravesend, but it wasn't until we'd called at [and left] Southend that they announced Gene had fallen down some stairs & wouldn't be joining us !

it would have been amazing to see gene at that time as he was very much still in his prime.i take it you did not get a chance later on to see him when he played england.

Re: Gene Vincent
I've read somewhere once Gene Vincent being described somethink like (Alzheimer you know), he cuts your throat from ear to ear with a grin on his face. Nicely describes his Rockabilly especially the early up tempo ones with Cliff Gallup on lead guitar.
Bring joy, avoid misery and be grateful

Re: Gene Vincent
The story Elvis tells about meeting Gene in New York -- July 3, 1956 -- is classic.
Bonus points for whoever can name the 1956 Elvis recording which directly influenced Gene's classic "Be-Bop-A-Lula."
I met Gene in New York, I, uh, I met him last week. He was in the train station up there. I was going to New York, I mean, from New York to Memphis. And Gene Vincent was in the train station. Uh, I didn't know who he was, one of the boys in my band knew him, and I walked over and introduced myself to him. And, uh, it was the first time I had seen him. He had seen me on shows, but he had never, I had never met him.
And, uh, I told him, I said "Gene," I said, "Congratulations on your record." I said "You really got a hit." And right immediately, the first thing he said was "Well, I wasn't trying to copy you." He said, "I wasn't trying to sound like you." I mean, just right off of the bat he said that, without even being asked. I told him, I said "Oh, I know that, it's just your natural style (laughs)."
