Ronnie McDowell's "The King Is Gone"
It's been awhile since I've heard this. It still brings the chills.

Rob,
I still get this one out every once in a while just to give it a listen. I clearly remember almost every radio station in town playing the song over and over and over again in '77. I also remember having to go to 2 or 3 different stores trying to find the album. Still brings back some rather sad memories of a very sad time.

Sure does Rob. Brings back a lot of memories gone by from almost 30 years ago. One of the best tribute songs in my opinion.

When I was a child I was a dreamer,
I read comic books and I was the hero of the comic book
And I saw movies and I was the hero in the movie
So every dream I´ve ever dreamed has come true a hundred times.

So every dream I´ve ever dreamed has come true a hundred times.
100% Agree one of the best yet tribute songs out there!!
Good to hear at this time of year,
As Mr.McDowell does a fine job on this tune, indeed.

Ronnie provided the vocals for the TV movie, Elvis And The Beauty Queen. When it first aired, I taped the audio, using a cassette recorder placed in front of the TV.
I LOVED his version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your (Friggin') Face. In fact, at that time young Elvisjock had never heard Elvis sing the song. When I subsequently purchased Elvis' studio performance, I was really disappointed. Ronnie's was better. As time went on, I heard many audience recorded Elvis versions, followed later by the soundboards. To this day, Elvis hasn't topped Ronnie on this song, to my ears.

That's the First time I've heard that. Thanks for posting.
I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

The key to any tribute is sincerity. Despite the hokey introduction, McDowell's vocal is superb and still evokes the deep sadness so many millions of fans felt that Tuesday in August. This one is a keeper, then and now.
