I came across another article, called "Lucky 13"
printed in the No.33 Strickly Elvis January, 1971
issue....
Where a fan by the name of Debbie Lynn Gobins
gives her account as to what she saw happening
at the Phoenix concert on Sept 9th 1970....
The article was called "Lucky 13"
This is an excerpt from her article where she is quoted
saying this about camera's.
Debbie Lynn Gobins wrote:
" I sat there in my seat anxiously waiting to see Elvis.
Ordinarily I don't talk that much..( by the way she was
seating in row 13 thus the reason for the article being
called Lucky 13)..
I'm kind of quiet around people I don't know.
But tonight was different.
I saw some cameras and was wondering if they were
movie cameras so I asked the man next to me. He said
they were, and that the cameras would be filming parts
of the audience as well as Elvis.
A moment later he pointed out Colonel Parker to me."
Take note: even tho the article appeared in a 71'
issue of "Strickly Elvis", back then it would sometimes
take months until your article appeared in the magazine.
In othere words this article would most likely have
been wrtten shorty after her experience at the
concert and sent to Strickly Elvis late September,
early October 1970.
The issue states its January 71'... However the
finale touches on the magazine were done proably
at least six weeks prior to the issue being sent out,
this would mean this issue would have been completed
sometime during November of 70', just a little over
two months after the concert..
Strickly Elvis back then came out once a month...
So this issue would have been in your hands
late November early December of 70'......
The recollection of the female fan was likely a honest
one, even tho lacking in detail from what we really want
to know some thirty six years later, she appears to have
had No motive to hype or make things sound more than
what they were not.....
With the respect of saying cameras instead of camera
we can assume she meant more than one and once again
points out when she spoke to the man the intention was
for the cameras to film the audience and most importantly
Elvis.

The only answer to this are finding the names to the cameramen who were present at the show. They should know the details if they remember so long after.
I have wonder why Elvis have messed up so much during that show. Was he only nervous because of the first tourshow,? Or was it because of the cameras filming him, new members of the band, Hugh Jarret singers. Strange. He performed I Got A Woman messing up the end, could not remember the lyrics of You Lost That Lovin Feeling, false start of Sweet Caroline and stopped the song etc. BUT, problems seems ok from Polk Salad Annie and he gives it all and performed a wild and very energic show. I hope you have seen the audience film from the show. Ok, very bad quality, but fantastic movements especially at the end of Suspicious Minds.

I would tend to believe a first-hand account from someone who wrote soon after attending the show. Does anyone have any pics from Phoenix showing the camera or cameras?

I agree with you Mike, sadly however she doesn't offer
us much in detail and still kinda leaves us hanging....
I'm a little surprised not more people wrote about
this concert and explained what they saw, especially
relating to camera's or camera, and offered their
experience to other fan clubs of the time.....
With the request of wanting to see a picture showing cameras
or camera at the concert, If I'm not mistaken I have seen
two pictures, but I could only fine the one for now....
The other picture I couldn't find wouldn't have helped
the case anyway, because if I recall the picture only
showed a camera filming the audience as well....
The one I did find was printed in a book released in 1977 called,
"The Official Elvis Fan club Commemorative Album 1935-1977
Now get this, beside this picture they say this in the book
"Elvis returned to Las Vegas in January and February 1970
as for a summer season in August. MGM were on hand
to film his summer festival for the movie "TTWII".
In September Elvis went on a nine-city tour and MGM
followed, filming extensively for the movie.
Now with what they said in the book, that's kinda stretching it a bit by
suggesting MGM continued to film throughout the tour....
Now wouldn't that have been cool
Nevertheless as hard as it is to believe...it is possible.....
but I don't thing we will go there.

Wait a sec, that's a portable camera.
The footage we've seen from Phoenix suggested a static or floor standing camera.
Do we know that venue to be of Phoenix, it looks like it to me, but others may have a better eye than I. Aye.

This is definately the Market square arena
On the back of the camera you can read "CBS"
Also, the lady in the first row is obviously Ger "Tallhair" in disguise..
Another mystery laid to rest.

Hi Robert,
If you look at the people and what they are wearing how they look(haircuts/style/dress etc etc ) this is 1970 all the way...Most definately not 1977.
Also another big clue is this is a 35mm camera nothing like the cameras used for the CBS Special.

If it wasn't filmed as some people suggest, It always had me wondereing why they say in the bonus features of "TTWII SE" that the Phoenix concert was filmed.
If it was only clips of the audience,isnt it misleading to the viewer to say that the Phoenix concert was filmed?
Or is the the team that laid out the DVD been misinformed?and dont know what the heck they are talking about..
If Piper, Boston 71 and Phoenix was caught on film and released in the near future,I bet it's safe to say we'd have one hell of a lot of happy Elvis fans out there...

The guy with the shoulder mount bothers me - well "bothers" is the wrong word really, if this is a pic from Boston and he was still there when the concert began (this is pre show time photo) I'll move my money to the other side of the table and say Elvis was captured.

I've already said there's film from both concerts, according to a couple of collector chaps I've spoken to. Just can't remember the exact details for the Pheonix film...but there is film from that show of Elvis.

Yes, apparantly so. Pretty raw footage, though, bit pro-shot all the same.
The Boston film is of better quality.
Pheonix material about half an hour.

the person I interviewed, that they are leaving
for the weekened and apologised, they didn't
have time to respond to my questions in the
detail I wanted, and wouldn't have time until
sometime next week...
