TRYIN´ TO GET YOU - quick poll + video
While editing TRYIN´ TO GET TO YOU footage from the 1976 Pittsburgh show, i was wondering what is the best version of that great Country Blues tune. I couldn´t make my choice between the original 1955 sun studio master and the 68 sit down#1 version. I finally chose the comeback one : man, that night he was on FIRE!
As a bonus, here is a link to the 1976 live rendition :

I would have actually voted for 1977 EIC Album if it was listed. That LP was actually my first experience with Elvis. I used to really dig that version, and got used to that so when I finally heard the original, it didn't sound original to my ears. The first time I heard EIC-LP was probably 1979. I was 8.

Great video work there Jeanno! I would love to see more. You seem to have some good source video.
This is one of the oldies that Elvis did good all the way. I love all the versions. The early version is perhaps the delicate, the -68 version the rawest and the 75-77 versions the most powerful. There are not many oldies that Elvis treated this good in his later years. However, Lawdy miss clawdy is another one them.

I am just watching the NYE 76 version now, and it is great to watch in synch. My personal fave is the Rapid city 77 version, but i have a soft spot for the 68 versions. Great to watch, and listen to as well. Na, i think i'll have to go with the 68 versions

It´s still the second most voted!... after the 68 version. It is a little dispiriting to see the '55 Sun side fairing so poorly. (It got my vote.)

Completely agree. The '68 version might as well on another planet. The '55 version doesn't even hint at the depths that Elvis plummed in this song in 1968. Any other performance pales in comparison. As Greil Marcus said it was the finest music of his life.

Well, Jeanno, at the time of my post, the Sun version was flagging....
LTB, it's just apples and oranges to me. As much as I like the '68 (versions), there's an undeniable freshness and smooth but tough sound in the Sun version. He wouldn't be on stage on '68 had that not happened.
And I do love the '77 version. If you have to boil down the highlights, he brought a new "oomph" to it in later years, even beyond '68. I love the rawness of tthe '68 version, but some of it sounds like a man who needs to rest his vocal chords, as cool as it sounded...
All of it was outrageously good.

june 21, 1977 gets a vote from me.
"Thank you very much. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the big, freaky International Hotel. Those little weirdo dolls on the walls. And those little funky angels on the ceiling. Uh, this is my first live appearance in 9 years. H-uhh! Thank you. I've appeared dead a few times, but this is my first live appearance. Before the evening is up, I will have made a complete and total fool of myself, and I hope you get a kick out of watching it." --EP

Well, I would vote for the 'Elvis In Concert' version from Rapid City in 1977, but as you don't have it as a voting option I won't vote at all

" Do you know anything about him ?
Do I know anything about him ?
I was raised in his home town
Are you going to be saying something to him, are you going to talk to him ?
Well that just all do depends
Are you looking forward to seeing him ?
Sure
Why don't you show us where he comes in here
He's coming through this door here, there's two doors in this entrance
he comes through this door here in this entrance and then open it back like this
then this one the other door comes back like this."
