Remembering AUGUST 16, 1977

I´m working right now but I´m listening to the CD 5 from Walk A Mile In My Shoes boxset.....playing now The Twelfth Of Never....

was just listening to com'on everybody, lawdy miss clawdy and suspicious minds earlier.

i'll probably pop in a few elvis movies later.

what happened to tcm's and amc's movie marathons??? they aren't playing any elvis movies today.

I noticed this too!!!

It seems like everytime I'm at work, or on Saturdays, the movie channels are bogged up with Elvis movies and today, of all day's, no Elvis movies?

The other nite CMT had a streak of Elvis movies playin...???

I do, however, see a couple of those E! crap TRUE Hollywood shows...

oh, those suck...

To tie in to that very day, I like to dig up these two albums,
which I associate with that time in my family:



My wife will think it's just
another Tuesday.
(I try to pace how much Elvis "programming" is watched,
lest she turn from liking Elvis to being sick of him. The Larry King
show last week went over like a lead balloon ...)

I think I'll play one of the '68 stand-up shows
(we're slowing re-watching that set) ,
plus some of ALOHA. Ever play even some of those
multiple takes like the gospel segment from '68
for a casual fan? Drives 'em up the wall, and I can't
blame them.

I encourage you all to run wild in Jordan's Elvis Library as well,

I've been listening to the 60's box set for a while and I've just watched the vigilcast on a very bad connection. I'll watch a movie later and maybe one of the Aloha shows. So many great things to watch/hear, so little time . Oh well time to change the CD.

I couldn't watch what I wanted to watch today.

There's only 24 hours in the day and it was hard trying to fit 60 hours of EOT out takes into it

Nicely done, Sue. I'm enjoying the well-selected "sad" songs.

It took me years to enjoy many of Elvis' songs without that "death"
sadness I once felt.

Now I'm long back to enjoying whatever the lyrics are about, but
hearing these again, it brings back that sad time of '77.

Today is a very sad day for me as well. It seems just like yesterday that Elvis died. I was 32 years old, sitting on the couch reading and listening to the radio when they broke in with the news. I sat there listening in shock, not believing what I was hearing. I'd been a fan from the very beginning and this was impossible............Elvis couldn't be gone!

I remember jumping up, running out the door. I have no idea where I went and don't remember when I returned home but found myself sitting on the couch trying to find more news on the radio and TV. The sound was out on our TV, so all I could do was watch it and try to read their lips. I cried for two weeks..........went to bed crying and woke up crying.........I still miss him today.

I was 9 yrs old in Aug 77 and was on holiday In Scarborough.
My Dad had given me some holiday money and I bought a
couple of the cheap campden cassettes,Separate Ways was
one,can't remember the other one.They were my first Elvis
albums and among the first of any albums I ever bought.Of
course I thought I was the biggest fan ever with my two
campden tapes and was devestated when news came through
of his death.Everyone in the little boarding house we were
staying in bought me sweets to console me.Memories eh


Today,as we speak,I am listening to Goodbye Memphis.
Although my favourite period is the 50s I always seem
to listen to a 75-77 concert on this day.

TCM in the UK have been running Elvis films back to back all day.

The Biography Channel is running The Presley's and a biog' of 'Cilla of all things.

Listening to CD's too and checking the Webcam on Elvis.com.

Wish I could have joined those who went to Memphis today.

Funny I started watching Bubba Ho-Tep last night. It will make finishing all that more important tonight. E did have the ending he shoulda. He was plucked from us too soon, yet like the Mystery Train, he took us to a place where we will never come back again.

I just remembered that my brother asked about
going to Memphis at the time, but within a short time
(maybe the heat, the crowds and those by-standers
who got killed in a car crash), it was turned down.
Up 'till that point, it almost seemed like it was being
considered. It was a wild idea, but emotions ran so strong
that a New York family who "didn't even know him"
could briefly consider driving down. For what, I don't
know, but it actually got a brief consideration....

what a great performance and quite ironic in that somehow i get the feeling Elvis knew alll along what was happening to him!?

I really like the "Original Sessions Mix" segement of this Disc. somehow, It's like rediscovering this music all over again.

I guess I'm jus missing him a lil bit more right now. it was about this time (4:00pm EST) 28 years ago, that the news of Elvis' passing was coming across the airwaves...

TCM (in the UK at least) have shown back to back Elvis movies all day. 'Jailhouse Rock' has just followed 'TTWII SE'.

I was 11 and was watching News at Ten in the UK when it was announced. Fans talk of the 80's as a terrible period and they are right. This was mainly due to the Goldman 'book' and the dearth of unreleased material being offered.

I've never been to Graceland during Elvis week, I expect it's quite emotional?

I hope you did or will do so, Minkahed. I heard it fine today from
where I sit in the USA. I watched the "death" episode
of the 16-hour (!) DEFINITIVE ELVIS set tonight, as well
as giving those 2 records a spin.

As for the documentary, I'd hoped for
perhaps more in the way of TV footage of the time but
the remembrances of Elvis told us all we wanted to
known (and how) about Elvis' last day.

Am I alone in thinking that Joe Esposito
also should have left out some of the details of that sad
day when he discovered Elvis?
