FECC Forum Running A Bit Slow???

#1532714

Post by Tony Trout »

Has the forum been running a little slow for anybody the last two or three days? When I post a message and click "Post Reply", it seems to take a good few minutes for the site to respond.

Has anyone else noticed this???

It's very slow on and off here too. Superfast Internet connection, high spec laptop, and when it doesn't respond I always check another website at the same time to make sure everything else works OK. I cleared all my cache etc, I'll have to see if that makes any difference. This only seems to have happened since the recent server upgrade, which makes no sense at all.

Definitely should not be occurring since the recent move to the new server.
If you could reply here, or send me a PM with the times this has occurred - I'll be able to check the logs to see if it perhaps is occurring during one of the daily automated backups/maintenance jobs. Even so, that should not be causing the slow-downs that are being described.

I've had the same thing happening. And still. Like this reply window took about 10 seconds to open where usually for me its instant.

I see nothing at this time to account for this. But, rest assured that I am keeping a close eye on it.
I am watching the logs in real-time, and may try something neat in a minute..

Double posting is bad.. I know. Mmmkay

Just implemented something experimental I've been working on to boost the speed a bit more.

Let me know if you notice a difference. It may still need a bit more tweaking.

Triple Posting is even worse....

Ok. It seems to have been boosted considerably. However, I found a bit of a paradox. When replying via the "quick reply" box (which is what I usually use) - the reply is posted immediately once "submit" is pressed. However, if you utilize the full editor (from clicking the "quote" or "Post Reply" options - there was a considerable speed difference. Keeping an eye on it closely.

Been very slow for me since the upgrade.

Has moments where it's "normal" but mostly takes quite a while for the next page to load.

That is very odd. I've been running some statistical software to measure the mean load times. Over the last 24 hours the average load time is 0.4secs. I will continue to monitor as there have some minor load "spikes" but nothing major enough to account for the described lagging.

Everyone, clear your browser cache, quit and relaunch your browser, and see what happens.

I tried that first as a server change can leave old settings sitting on the PC.

I've noticed other sites hosted by Elvicities have similar problems. Sometimes only the top half of the forum page loads, stops and then 10 to 15 seconds later the rest of the page loads, other times I click on a topic and it just hangs and never loads at all, I have to click stop and re-click on the link. I've cleared my cache in both Chrome and IE.

It might just be that it'll iron itself out after a few dates and settle down.

Regards,
Graeme.

Hi Graeme.
Just out of curiosity, can you try an alternate browser? One that you use seldomly/not at all previously? There literally is no explanation that I can think of server-side that would be causing the slowdowns you are experiencing. The only other thing I can come up with is that possibly your isp is having a latency issue connecting to the first few "hops" of the server's bandwidth provider. Other than contacting the isp to see why there might be such latency (as there shouldn't be, you are the first/only to report such significant lag) would be to wait it out. As such latency issues eventually iron themselves out.

Not the only one, I'm still getting the same problems. I think there were two events this morning, at approximately 10:30 and 11:30 (UK time).

Thanks to @The Pirate for pinpointing times where this occurred. I've now been able to optimize a few settings, and am watching things closely.
Please report back if you notice that it is better - OR - worse.
Thanks!!!!!

@G-Hubb,
I've also just now implemented an "Nginx reverse proxy/cache" server. This has decreased load times 70% across the board (no pun intended).
Please let me know if you continue to experience lag.

No, thanks to you for taking the time to check these things. I'll certainly keep an eye on it, but I ought to point out that it's never been a case that it was constantly slow. It would be fast until, without warning, I'd get these odd slow downs. But hopefully that's cured it.

Thanks @The Pirate and @G-Hubb for your reports back.
The nginx proxy was implemented last night when there was relatively low traffic. Now that it is a peak traffic time, I am watching everything and making tweaks here and there to ensure that the lags experienced, will not return. Granted, there are variables that are sometimes out of my control. But I'm doing my very best to ensure that the forum stays speedy for everyone - all of the time.
If anyone else feels they have any info to contribute, such as reports of lag (including time it occurred, what you were doing, etc) feel free to post them here.
Thanks!

That was me. Sorry about that, @SteamrollerBlues
Have been tweaking various configuration files. And when that is done, it restarts various services - which would cause the behavior you describe.
I apologize for any inconvenience.

Just noticed the part where you said it signed you in as another member.. That should NOT be happening. Investigating now.
