Re: TERROR ATTACK IN FRANCE
I hope there are laws against "making terroristic threats," which is a crime in California, for which you do jail time.
That's what I saw on Twitter: "As you sow so shall you reap" and it scared the crap out of me that people applauded it! That's a threat. Any threats against individuals or groups must be sent to law enforcement and pursued.
Take care, Jane. Great post!

Nicely said TLC.
The media play their part in all of it and they secretly love it, its all presented for maximum dramatization and misinformation.
But we know that already dont we?

I agree 100% with you Jane!

Re: TERROR ATTACK IN FRANCE
I was referring specifically to Tosh.0!!!!!! Definitely not to the heart of their finest shows. Stewart, Colbert, even Drunk History, which I love. And respect. And quite a few more. @drjohncarpenter I edited the original post.drjohncarpenter wrote:I sure hope that was a tongue-in-cheek statement.rjm wrote:(I wish Comedy Central had that warning, but 16-year-olds are their stock-in-trade.)
ONLY. No offense to Comedy Central's brilliant shows intended. (And I watch Tosh.0 all the time. I do. Last night, he said {cringe} that Europeans didn't bathe - EVER. But that's the point: FREE speech, even it makes people angry, or is just wrong AND offensive.)

P.S. -- Although,uh, aw, I take his point about soccer. It's not exciting because . . . "IT'S SOCCER; it's NOT ALLOWED!"

Indeed, regarding Nigeria. I have been flooding social media as much as I can.Gitchops83 wrote:http://www.4thmedia.org/2015/01/french-police-commissioner-suicided-after-attempting-to-issue-murder-warrant-against-president-obama/

But, I just now clicked your link about the "Vast Obama Conspiracy." (Reminds me of what they used to say about Bill Clinton and the Vince Foster thing.) That is quite an extremist site; they hate the President with a fury. And then they're going with CIA-Mossad Black Op stuff . . . puleeze. I don't play that sort of thing.

"Why does the world pay more attention to 17 murders in France than to 2,000 murders in Africa?'
That's the question Rex Murphy and many others are asking after a brutal massacre by the terror group Boko Haram in Nigeria received less media coverage than the terror attacks in Paris last week.
And it wasn't just the media. More than 40 world leaders showed up in Paris last weekend for a unity rally. There was no such show of support by the world's most powerful for the victims in Nigeria.
Murphy thinks that's a travesty. Why do you think the massacre in Nigeria received less attention than the Paris attacks?

Re: TERROR ATTACK IN FRANCE
You have to remember that "the world" doesn't pay less attention to the news in Africa, it's the media that chooses what makes the news. Ultimately we are part of "western society," and so that is why some choices are made. The Paris news affected the security of all western countries directly - and is ultimately caused (rightly or wrongly) by actions taken by countries within the "western society." What happens in Africa (rightly or wrongly) doesn't affect our lives directly in the same way. But then, does the news in Africa worry so much about what happens in Paris or London or New York? Probably not.paulsweeney wrote:http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/01/16 ... 89226.html

What does and doesn't make the news isn't chosen by viewers, but those who put the programmes together. Why was the massacre in Nigeria not in the news and yet the Ebola crisis in Africa made headlines for weeks - long before anyone in the UK or the USA was stricken with the illness? These decisions aren't straightforward, nor are they always right, but news programmes ultimately still have to appeal to viewers, and have to get viewer numbers. The UK election this year will get coverage in the UK, but not much in Spain, probably. That's not wrong, it's just sensible - what happens in our politics doesn't matter very much to those living in Spain. It's a lesser case, but still the same principal as the Nigeria/Paris one. Audience demographics come even more into play in the USA with the various biased news networks.

Re: TERROR ATTACK IN FRANCE
Death and violence in Africa is seen by western media as "dog bites man." Meaning: "not news." Institutional racism built-in to the whole mediated western world.
Thank goodness for social media! Lotta nuts, yeah, but democracy lives there. Twitter is both horrifying and magnificent.

Re: TERROR ATTACK IN FRANCE
I don't mean to offend anybody, but this talk about themassacreinFrance vs. themassacreinNigeria reminds of when I was a little bitty kid, and my elders would tell me "you've got to finish everything that's on the dishes, just think of those poor kids in Africa who have nothing to eat".
I'm a grownup now, and I don't accept cheap moralising from the mass media, thanks.

Re: TERROR ATTACK IN FRANCE
Whether we like it or not, people want news that affects them. The massacre in Nigeria doesn't affect them and their lives and how they live it - the shootings in France do. It highlights a danger in their own part of the world.rjm wrote:Death and violence in Africa is seen by western media as "dog bites man." Meaning: "not news." Re: TERROR ATTACK IN FRANCE
That's something else I learned in J-School. I just wonder how far we, I can go with that. It's true. Now. But this sort of thing spread initially from places we never thought about, and it is largely our fault that it did.poormadpeter wrote:Whether we like it or not, people want news that affects them. The world is getting smaller. Eventually, it comes up to bite us. If that's a satisfactory reason for caring. Another reason is that when thousands are slaughtered, anywhere, it really ought to matter to us.
But yes, I take your point. It's what I was taught. It isn't news if it doesn't effect your readership. Period. Dog bites man. Not news.
If you look back at WWII, the U.S. only entered because Pearl Harbor was attacked, not to save various targeted groups of civilian minorities in Europe. It wasn't news; we didn't care. Really. We didn't. We turned away large boatloads of refugees and sent them back to death. We never even bombed a single set of railroad tracks to a death camp. Not once. It wasn't important; it didn't affect us.
It just wasn't significant as either "news" nor politically. Who cared about some Jews, Gypsies, mentally handicapped people, just 5000 people of African descent, dissidents, or homosexuals? We did not fight that war for them. It didn't matter. But looking back, should it have mattered? We could have saved lives, if those lives had ever mattered to us. They did not.
