Dixie Locke & Elvis (1957 article)
This article may not be very factual. But I was surprised to see this being published as early as in early 1957.

Re: Dixie Locke & Elvis (1957 article)
Ned Polsky is yet another writer with a history. He was about 28 when he wrote that piece, and was later a professor of sociology at State University of New York, Stony Brook. In 1967 he published a book of note called Hustlers, Beats, and Others. The fool wrote:This article may not be very factual. But I was surprised to see this being published as early as in early 1957.

The article is actually pretty close to truth from start-to-finish, save the strong implication that Dixie Locke was the reason they parted and more than a bit "flighty," that she was closer in age than three years apart, and that she was with him in June 1955 when Elvis burned up his automobile on the road (he was actually with Shirley Searcy).
Elvis did carry a torch for her even after they formally broke up in mid-1955, and they did have arguments based on Elvis' jealous nature and ever-demanding career. Polsky does not mention the scores and scores of girls Elvis began to meet as soon as he began touring in the fall and winter of 1954. In the end, one can only imagine how embarrassing this was to see in print, for both Dixie and Elvis.
Thank you for the fascinating share.

One thing. They met after high school, in church. She didn't go to Humes.
Mostly, though, he captured it. I didn't know Polsky had passed away, or that he wrote something like this! Thanks!

Sorry Doc, but the correct name is Shirley Searcy.

Thanks for the correction. Or course, I didn't have my copy of A Boy From Tupelo handy, and was typing from memory. How did I do with the rest of it?Mississippi wrote:Sorry Doc, but the correct name is Shirley Searcy.

Shirley Searcy Delgato may have yodeled, but she did not date Elvis for 30 months ...Shirley was a Kilgore Rangerette, an accomplished yodeler, and dated Elvis Presley for two and a half years in his early days.
