I agree Johnny Horton was great, although I havn't heard that much by him. Two that standout for me are 'North to Alaska' from the film, also 'Battle of New Orleans'.
I must listen to more and maybe purchase that Bear boxset, I have the Gene Vincent Bear boxset of all his masters so I know that they are a good company.

Chris.

Great voice! I have always enjoyed Whispering Pines by Johnny Horton. I remember my father brought some records from the States in the seventies (he was a sailor) one being a double album of Johnny HortonĀ“s greatest hits. How lovely they sound these old country records...! :)

Johnny Horton was great, both as songwriter and performer.

My favorite tracks are "Honky Tonk Man" (featuring Bill Black on bass)
and "When It's Springtime In Alaska".

Those two Bear Family sets are really marvellous - highly recommended!

My favourites are and will always be "Whispering Pines", "The Mansion You Stole" and most of all "All For The Love Of A Girl".

"Video not available"... But his rendition of "Lost Highway" also ranks among my favourite Horton recordings. I also love his two versions of "Words". *sigh*

Just beautiful music.

The Bear Family boxes are awesome, and they include many terrific true rockabilly tunes.
I like his history songs and stuff, but his rockabilly music stands out to me.
