i can see why elvis rejected that song. it had nothing going for it and was poor.i am surprised that reeves recorded it tho even he couldnt have thought much to it if it wasnt released till after his death...

There is no evidence that Elvis ever heard the song after MGM rejected it.

There is no evidence Elvis heard any of the demos for the 1957 MGM project.

But, of course, he must have heard some, if not all, of them.

You'll never know, maybe he even tried this song out, it has it's own take number (take 2018, may 7th 1957), according to session logs, it was not recorded, but remember how "Danny" suddenly appeared on ALP vol. 3. I know it's a dream, but it really had been something.

Lol at the people saying "yea Elvis would have done it better" as if Jim Reeves was some second-rate singer

Many MGM songs were given film numbers, but that doesn't mean they were cut.

Still, there are songs from the movie years, or pieces of songs, that we have yet to hear.

Fair point, Reeves was a great singer.

Of course, if Elvis recorded it in his 1957 style, more rockin' and lively, no doubt it would be the definitive version.

And Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett would have been able to buy houses a lot sooner.

Why does this worthwhile post of over 12 months vintage become a sticky now?

Why not all the Doc's historic posts?

I really like Elvis during his Jailhouse Rock period. He was in charge and he made sure everyone knew. Ofcourse, the colonel could not tolerate this and made sure Elvis was reduced to a puppet in the sixties, not having the balls to refuse to record/perform such classics as Old MacDonald and so on.
Imagine Elvis refusing this song in the 50's, he probably would have jumped at it somewhere during 1962, 1963.

Interestingly, not all were lost to history.

Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett's "Young Hearts" was originally submitted for MGM's "Jailhouse Rock" soundtrack in April 1957.

When Elvis passed on it, they gave "Young Hearts" to Jim Reeves, who cut it at RCA's Nashville studio a month later. But it stayed in the vaults until a year after his death, when RCA issued it in the summer of 1965.

When you listen to Reeves, in a way you're hearing Jim "doing" an Elvis song!

Well, almost.

Young hearts can be foolish, and make a mistake

If they're not forgiven, young hearts can break

So kiss me my darling, hold me tight

Young lips make everything right

Young hearts can be crueler, young hearts can be blind

I'm sorry that mine dear, was one of that kind

If you can forgive me, kiss me and then

Our young hearts will be happy again

Young hearts can be foolish, and make a mistake

If they're not forgiven, young hearts can break

So kiss me my darling, hold me tight

Young lips make everything right

Young hearts can be crueler, young hearts can be blind

I'm sorry that mine dear, was one of that kind

Not too wild about it by Jim Reeves. But who knows what it would have sounded like, had Elvis tackled it. Not too exciting i would imagine.

I kind of like the tune, but bear in mind Reeves did not release the track either. It stayed on the shelf until after he'd died.

Elvis in 1957 was pure magic, and I'll wager he would have elevated the material to something we would cherish today.

After listening to the song a couple more times it has grown on me.

I think the song would have fit in nicely next to ''Young and Beautiful''.

It's a decent 50s styled love song ballad.
