This thread has managed to be both interesting and amusing. It's great to know that everyone on this messageboard can put aside their petty grievances, pool their vast knowledge and work together towards solving this genuine Elvis mystery.
OK, so we may not have solved the case but we have assembled a list of nearly 200 suspects.
And isn't it supposed to be the journey rather than the destination that is most enjoyable?

Doc, I was just wondering why it is obviously not Albert King. To me the pic thenexte posted looks exactly like the guy next to Elvis. And it looks like they are both left handed.drjohncarpenter wrote:It's quite obviously NOT Albert King standing next to Elvis.
Just curious as to why it definately isn't him.
Thanx

Because they do not look alike -- many, many facial differences are apparent.sam wrote:Doc, I was just wondering why it is obviously not Albert King.drjohncarpenter wrote:It's quite obviously NOT Albert King standing next to Elvis.

Woodleyjohn, you're definitely on to something, as the answer of course has been right beneath our feet all along:woodleyjohn wrote:Hey Ray, are you sure it's not Mahalia Jackson, who I believe was Michael's grandmother on his father's side once removed.Spellbinder wrote:It's Chubby Checker!!
It's Michael Jackson!
Proof: The guy from the old photo doesn't look the slightest like Michael Jackson does today. And other old photos of Michael Jackson doesn't look the slightest like Michael Jackson today!
Heureka!
Ain't that someting: Elvis chatting merrily along to his future son-in-law.
Sorry - couldn't help it.
All the best,
Jakob

re
i don t know if it s Albert KING on the pic
But
A King used to wear a ring on the same finger than the mystery man
Interesting to note that A King did an elvis tribute album in 1970 called
"Blues for Elvis - King Does the King's Things"

The guy's name is August Simms. I checked with Marty Lacker. He said,
"That is August Simms who worked for Jackie Wilson. The picture was taken on the set of Double Trouble, I think that was the movie, the day after we had seen Jackie perform at The Trip nightclub on Sunset Blvd.
We had a good time with Jackie, August and Jackie's other guy Clarence
Whatley. Some of us remained good friends with Jackie until he died. "

Jim, although I do wish we could find an image of the man, the story from Marty is spot-on as far as what I determined as the date, place and situation. There must be a third photo of Jackie, Elvis and August from that July meeting.JamesVRoy wrote:The guy's name is August Simms. I checked with Marty Lacker. If anyone owns the Jackie Wilson biography "Lonely Teardrops," August is apparently mentioned there -- perhaps there are photos, too!
According to an Amazon customer review of the biography, his name is August Sims, and his description ALSO fits the puzzle:
Unless we get something else, like another hilarious joke from "Spellbinder," I think the mystery is solved!Jackie's touring manager, working under the auspices of Vastola, was a Mob enforcer named Johnny Roberts. Roberts employed a minder to look after Jackie. He was August Sims, a hulk of a black man weighing around 230 pounds. He provided protection as well as ensuring Jackie made his concert dates.
Jim -- please tell Marty thank you, and I also really appreciate your help!
Anyone know Joe Tunzi's email address? We must let him know!!

James, thanks for the information from Marty Lacker. That sounds very plausible! Once we follow up, this can be confirmed for good and we can consider another piece of the puzzle solved. As a total blues nut over the years (as well as R&B, etc.), I can honestly say he didn't register at all as a face I knew, and I tend to never forget a face, even from just records.
Keep us posted, Doc, once you get that other information. Good work, folks.

Evidently, one thing you can't do is properly "quote" another posting.Spellbinder wrote:[

Did anybody ever tell Mr. Simms that he bears a resemblance to Albert King?JamesVRoy wrote:The guy's name is August Simms. I checked with Marty Lacker. He said,
