Karate 1977 February?

Sun Apr 14, 2013 3:14 am

I just found this rare press karate live shoot. Do we have a date? Could it be February 1977?

Polk Salad, Chicago May 2nd.
Maybe the single best show of the year.

It's actually Milwaukee April 27...

Scott, wasn't there a discussion some time ago around the lyricksheet on stage right in front of Ronnie's kit, indicating Chicago?

I don't know about that :) but the band platform indicates Milwaukee...

Well, here's Chicago May 2; as you can see, the band platform is different. :)

Hey, wouldn't that shot make a great avatar? Especially if colorized? ;-)

The photo was taken by Ronald C. Modra on 4-27-1977. He was the Milwaukee Brewers' team photographer at the time. He would soon become a much-celebrated, successful sports photographer for Sports Illustrated:

Sadly, the next day's front page review in the Milwaukee Journal was headlined, "Crown Slips Badly on Rock King":

I don't think Modra took photos for Milwaukee Journal, as he was there as a freelance. Some of his photos can be found at Gettyimages. Here's one alternate I found.

The Journal had its own photographer (Robert L. Miller) taking photos that night. The actual headline of the review was: Crown Slips Badly on Rock King Elvis. The local sentinel was somewhat kinder with Elvis Still Tender to Hounding Fans

Thanks, Milwaukee it is.
Elvis lost quite some pounds during this tour.
But probably not the healthy way.

The great sounding audience recording reveals an uncritical audience,
and a standard show for the period..

Presley does not look like he has lost weight -- was he even heavier on the previous tour?

Weight was zigzaggin all over the place in 1977, with an ultimate sad lowpoint in May.
The Polk Salad Annie shot from Milwaukee is quite alright though, agree Doc?

Of all the 1977 pictures around, I think this one is quite OK.

Few, if any, 1977 stage pictures are quite OK.

I understand your point Robert. Elvis looks better in this photo than many other 1977 photos. However, there are also some taken at the same show where he doesn't look good. 1977 photos of Elvis looking good were few and far between.

I agree, Paul. With the absolute worst, IMO, being from February 12, 1977 in Hollywood, FL. I cringe and almost want to cry for the man because of how bad he looks and how awesome he looked only five to seven years earlier.

What program do you use to colorize black and white photos? That's pretty dang good!
