David Soul - Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain

It's only a brief rendition, but does Hutch manage to better Elvis' insipid cover from the year before? :smt017

The clip is from "The DAVID SOUL & FRIENDS Special" (ABC-TV, Thursday, August 18, 1977):

How weird it aired just two days after Elvis died in Memphis?

As for the song, Soul and his friends do a really nice version, and it is indeed better than the 1976 master cut by Elvis. Their gentle, acoustic arrangement is just perfect for the song.

And we all know what an amazing set of pipes David Soul possesses.

He did a version of Loving Arms during an episode of Starsky & Hutch as well.

Not a bad version

when he first started in showbiz, David Soul wanted to be a singer more than an actor. He really wanted to be known for his music and not his handsome good looks.
He began his singing career by wearing a mask (shades of Orion LOL). :wtf: He walked onstage and announced "I'm David Soul and i want to be known for my music"
Strange but true story.

UPDATE: Did a little more research on David Souls days singing behind a mask. He called himself "the covered man" and more resembled an alien from a cheap sci-fi movie. He not only sported a black ski mask but his whole body was covered in a black costume. He appeared in this costume for 4 months, then dropped the gimmick. He appeared on the Merv Griffin variety show as "the covered man"
check out his publicity photos on Google. Very strange indeed.

Yeah, especially when you consider Elvis apparently singing it on the morning of August 16th.

I agree, it's a surprisingly good interpretation and fabulous arrangement.

I've never been that enamoured with Elvis' cut [possibly the most "produced" recording of his 70's catalogue].
It's certainly superior material, but he's really not able/willing to do anything particularly memorable with it.
A shame.

Nice version of BECITR, thanks for posting.

And I almost forgot what a great song "Loving Arms" is.

The only version I ever liked is Willie's It stands alone as a great solo track or part of one of the greatest country albums ever made. Its a perfect rendition.
