Maybe the FTD policy changed after almost 14 years.

This is incorrect.

The single-disc digipaks are used for standard FTD releases, like the recent From Hawaii To Las Vegas.

The one- or two-disc gatefold sets are special, "deluxe album" editions added to the catalog starting in 2003 with Fun In Acapulco.

These deluxe FTD releases have been ramped up in recent years because much of the hardcore fan base has "turned the sharp corner of fifty."

Hope this helps.
