A "Quiet Visit" To Tupelo --> December 1970 !

On Tuesday, December 29, 1970, Elvis made a "quiet visit" to Tupelo to collect another badge.

This one was given to him by Lee County Sheriff Bill Mitchell, at the County Jail. Elvis knew Bill from his childhood, when Mitchell played in Mississippi Slim's band at WELO Radio.

Also with him that day were wife Priscilla and old childhood pal Guy Harris, a Tupelo Police sergeant at the time.

Never seen this one before.

Harris kept in touch with Elvis even after he left Tupelo.

There was a lot of "stuff" going on in late 1970 - early 1971, wasn't there ... some of it weird and some of it wonderful ...

In the eight weeks leading up to New Year's Day, 1971, it seems Elvis could not get his fill of badges...

That's not Bill Morris.

Guy was childhood friend of Elvis in Tupelo and in the Tupelo Police force (off duty) at the time of this picture.

Fascinating that EP was already thinking of using, recording and releasing "The Impossible Dream" as early as December 1970.

I wonder if it in any way ties in with his "I was a dreamer" speech so beautifully delivered just a short time later?

Elvis and Guy Harris go way back , he is still very active in the Tupelo area and attends Tupelo fan club meetings and events as a regular occurrence.

Maybe it even ties into "If I Can Dream," although Elvis did not bring it to life in his '70s concerts.

Have met Guy Harris whilst in Tupelo and he is a very nice person, always has time for the Elvis fans visiting the Birthplace. Wonder if Elvis visited the overlook to look down on his birthplace where BMG have since placed the marker. There are plans for two new statues to be placed at the overlook once funds have been raised, one of Elvis the boy sitting on a milk crate and one of Elvis the Entertainer.

There did seem to be a cause and effect relationship between the assassination/kidnap threat and the paternity suit, and Elvis' all-in enthusiasm for all things law enforcement. Are there any photos of Elvis with badges, guns or blue lights, taken prior to late 1970?

I agree with elvisjock that stresses in 1970 (ongoing marriage issues, August threat, November paternity suit) were a major factor in his intense interest in law enforcement and collecting of official badges, weaponry and karate.
