Hmm, I welcome the project (and RJM is gonna love it) but I worry that some of their Elvis chronology is a bit off ...
Indeed she is!
Yes, there seem to be additional photos, too! (From that late night in '57, after Elvis went to the Opry, that late night that
never happened in Guralnick - in the Kindle edition, sheesh, that should have been rectified, what with all the photos . . .)
Thanks a million, Rocker, and George!
Yes, the chronology is very confused, whereas in the book, it is very specific. Anyone can believe whatever they want in regard to Johnny, but the book is scrupulously researched, and the author searches for, and finds corroboration, for some of more "outlandish" stories. It's up to the individual to adjudicate both his credibility, and that of the corroboration. Now, of course, there are others, who tell other accounts, and they are generally believed, while Bragg is disbelieved - in spite of the corroboration. Anyway that's the book.
I don't seem to see the book's author here. Which is likely one reason the chronology is all mixed up.
And yes, Hank Williams (and many others in the biz) bought songs. This is not like "claiming credit" for a song: buying a song is giving a guy a few bucks - or however much, for lyrics, or a melody, or a whole song, and saying slam, bam, thank you sir. And never see the guy again, and no royalties. This has been established through correspondence engaged in between Williams and Fred Rose. Williams asked Rose exactly how it was done. He was a good writer, but it is said he had difficulty with "narrative" type lyrics, and this was desired of him. So he asked about how you go about it. And Johnny says he did it: to him. I'm sure Bragg was unaware of this correspondence with Fred Rose!
And that's the magic of Johnny's amazing stories: they have foundation. (There's one in the book which cannot be corroborated due to circumstance. And the author says so before it begins.) I hope the documentary is stronger on these points than it appears. But, at least, it's visually very exciting! You can SEE the story, which is so fabulous!

If people don't have the book, DO get the book! Make up your own mind, but do get the book!

Thanks again, Rocker, and George!!!
