Los Angeles Times Features Graceland's New Exhibits in 2013

January 03, 2013
Image

Elvis fans have a lot to look forward to this year as Graceland prepares to open two new exhibits in 2013.
The Los Angeles Times recently posted an article in their Travel section about what fans can expect from
the new additions to the king's home.

"Elvis fans, there'll be a whole lotta jumpsuit viewing goin' on in 2013," states an article on LATimes.com. "Graceland will roll
out two new travel-themed exhibits at Elvis Presley's Memphis home this year - one about his movies and concerts in Hawaii
and another about the king's Las Vegas years."

The first exhibit, “Elvis’ Hawaii: Concerts, Movies and More!,” will open to the public this Saturday, January 5. The exhibit
celebrates Elvis’ love for Hawaii and the 40th anniversary of “Aloha from Hawaii.” This is the first exhibit to explore Elvis’
connection with the islands. The exhibit will allow guests to experience Elvis’ Hawaii and see why it was one of his favorite
places to vacation and perform.

The second exhibit, “Elvis: Live from Vegas,” opens on March 1 and will allow guests to experience Las Vegas through the eyes of the king. From the first time the King of Rock ‘n’ roll stepped foot on-stage in Vegas through his triumphant return in 1969 and beyond, this exhibit captures all of the excitement and energy that is Elvis in Las Vegas.

Read more about the exciting new exhibits coming to Graceland by visiting LATimes.com. Ready to plan your own rock 'n' roll pilgrimage? Check out our free online trip planner!

''Elvis And Kauai'' -

Kaua‘i has a love affair with Elvis Presley. He wasn't just the King of Rock 'n Roll; to them, he was (and still is) the King of Kaua‘i – that slick-haired hunk who stole women's hearts with his swag and made them swoon with every knee shake and hip sway.
...............................................................................
Today's no different. Mention the Coco Palms Resort to anyone, and you'll immediately know what I mean. The classic crooner filmed Blue Hawaii there in the 1960s, only to return a couple years later to film a second movie, Paradise Hawaiian Style.

But that famous wedding ceremony in the final scene of Blue Hawaii is what really stuck for the island…because it happened twice. Elvis wooed his onscreen bride with the Hawaiian Wedding Song, as they floated through the fairytale-like lagoon in a canoe decorated with flowers.

He eventually returned to Coco Palms with his real-life bride, Priscilla Presley, to re-enact the scene when they renewed their marriage vows.

Elvis Presley's Aloha from Hawaii, the 40th Anniversary Celebration in Hawaii

Six Day Event in January 2013 Will Honor the King and His Love of Hawaii

..............................................................................

Elvis will be in the building - at least in spirit - and accompanied by many of his most loyal fans for an exciting six days and five nights in Hawaii.

Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. has announced details for Elvis Presley's Aloha from Hawaii, the 40th Anniversary Celebration in Honolulu, Hawaii, to be held Thursday, January 10 – Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort in Honolulu.

The six days and five nights of the celebration will feature concerts, panel discussions and tours of Elvis-related sights on the island, all culminating with an enhanced movie screening of Aloha from Hawaii held 40 years later in the same venue as the original concert.

Hawaii was very important to Elvis Presley both as a place to perform and as his own personal vacation destination. It was where scenes for three of his movies were filmed. Hawaii is also where several of his concerts were performed and where he went to relax with friends and family.

Elvis's First Visits to Hawaii 1957-1961

Elvis' first visit in November 1957 was for three performances. Two were held at Honolulu Stadium and another for service personnel and their families at Schofield Barracks. During this visit, he and his entourage stayed in suites at the top of the Hilton Hawaiian Village's first tower.

His return for a performance on March 25, 1961, saw over $62,000 raised for the building of a memorial over the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor and created awareness for the memorial around the world.

..............................................................................
Elvis' Hawaii Movies 1961-1966

During Elvis' movie career, scenes for the films (Blue Hawaii - 1961, ; Girls!, Girls!, Girls! - 1962, ; and Paradise, Hawaiian Style - 1966 were all filmed in Hawaii with many of the scenes shot on the beaches of Waikiki.

The songs from the resulting soundtracks have become classics instantly associated with the islands.
...................................................................................................................................
Aloha from Hawaii - 1973
........................................................................................................................................
Elvis broke records when he returned for his concert in 1973, Aloha from Hawaii, , held at what is now the Neal Blaisdell Center. That concert was broadcast live via satellite on January 14, 1973, and is regarded as the most watched broadcast by an individual entertainer in television history.

The concert was a fundraiser for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund and more than $75,000 was raised for cancer research in memory of the Hawaiian composer and entertainer. Lee, who died of throat cancer in December 1966, was the composer of the song "I'll Remember You," which was recorded by Elvis.

................................................................................................................
Elvis' Final Visit to Hawaii - 1977

For his last visit, in March 1977, Elvis brought along 31 friends and family members who stayed at both the Hilton Hawaiian Village and a private residence in Lanikai.

Btw - The cape is hiplength version that was used in Aloha - long version was too long for show which would have tripped up Elvis during the show - so he opted for Hip version - he wore this on Jan 12th and 14th 73 Andy -

...............................................................................................................................
Trivia About The Long Cape For Aloha -Jan 14th 1973 -

( Please See Pictures On This Thread Below )
ORIGINAL CAPE MADE FOR ELVIS PRESLEY'S ALOHA FROM HAWAII CONCERT - 1973

..................................................................................
In terms of authentic iconic Elvis items, it does not get much better than this! This is THE ORIGINAL cape which was made for Elvis to wear for the legendary "Aloha from Hawaii" Concert in January, 1973. This cape was designed by Elvis' designer Bill Belew so that when Elvis came on stage, he could be "hidden" behind the long cape.
....................................................................................................................................

The idea was that Elvis would appear on stage for this world-first event, behind the cape and at the end of the Space Oddysey, he would drop the cape and turn to face the audience, revealing himself to the waiting crowd.

When Bill Belew arrive in Hawaii with this magnificent 5 foot long cape, Elvis tried it on and almost tumbled over backward as he tried to walk. It was decided that for the concert itself, a shorter version of this design should be used. Bill Belew then had only 24 hours to make a new cape.

This cape was then sent back to Graceland and remained there, in its archives until the charity auction held in 1999.

This cape represents not only the single most significant live performance ever by Elvis, but also the ultimate in authenticity and provenance.

As most people know, this cape and it's design are significant (not only because of it's place in history) but also because the design of the eagle and the colours were to represent Elvis' passion and patriotism for his own country.
