Hi. I think it was released in 1999 and had sold 2m by Dec 2005, 3m by Oct 2010. The 1.4m you mention would probably be because it was given a new serial number and Soundscan simply started from scratch with that whenever it became available. Anyone confirm?

Correct. Each time a label changes a catologue number, soundscan starts the sales(scans)back to zero.

I'm a little surprised Afternoon is still selling that well with the Legacy MSG and Prince on the market.

Re: SoundScan (US) sales-figures

Fri Dec 14, 2012 10:53 pm

"Afternoon at the Garden" selling like it does, in spite of other MSG-related albums, all more recently released and currently available in the market may be due to four reasons.

i) the price

ii) it is readily available as you walk in stores which have it, you can see it,

iii) people may associate it with the reviews they read recently about the other MSG releases,

and most importantly for non-Elvis fans (LOL),

iv) the cover, the most politically correct Elvis cover, in 1997, in 2005, or in 2012, I've ever seen (LOL). The two times I've bought it (I lost the first in a move from one country to another), it drew a second look from the person at the counter. Both times, and in two different states.

The one thing I notice with this list is that many of the releases listed are now handled by Sony's Custom Marketing department. It's not necessarily a bad philosophy to hand some of the older catalog titles over to Custom Marketing, as they can sell them at a cheaper cost than what they were priced at when originally released. They did this with a number of the 60's movie soundtracks several years ago along with three of the 70's albums. When combined with the original release's sales, often times the additional sales at a lower cost can push these titles close to a Gold Record. Look no further than "An Afternoon In The Garden."

"Elvis By The Presleys" wouldn't be a bad title to hand over to Custom Marketing, as I'm sure it's pretty close to a Gold Record. The one title I'm not surprised has done so well since Custom Marketing has gotten a hold of it is "Heart & Soul." I think and still think this was a fabulous release. It wouldn't be a bad idea for Sony to hand over some of the titles that are very close to a Gold Record or an upgrade to the Custom Marketing department to help push them over the threshold. This could apply to some of the albums from the 50's into the 70's that probably sold anywhere from 200,000-400,000 copies but simply stalled out after that. A simple reissue over a couple of years could easily garner anywhere from 100,000-300,000 in sales. Ultimately, I think this ends up benefitting the entire catalog. I don't know what the sales totals are for some of the albums released during Elvis' lifetime that aren't certified at least Gold (I think Ernst's book "Day By Day" sheds some light on this), but could you imagine if Custom Marketing got a hold of "For LP Fans Only," "A Date With Elvis," "Pot Luck," "It Happened At The World's Fair," "Fun In Acapulco," "Kissin' Cousins," "Elvis For Everyone," "Harum Scarum," "Frankie And Johnny," "Paradise, Hawaiian Style," "Spinout," "Double Trouble," "Clambake," "Speedway," "Back In Memphis," "Love Letters From Elvis," "Elvis (Including Fool)," "Raised On Rock," "Promised Land," "Today" and "The Sun Sessions." Damn near every album released during Elvis' lifetime could be certified at least Gold. Custom Marketing has already done a little of this with straight reissues of "Elvis Now" (already certified), "Good Times," and "From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, TN" (already certified) a few years ago. Then once every album released during his lifetime is certified at a minimum of gold, the label should look at titles released after Elvis died and target some of those that sold fairly well enough that with a little more push could push them over the Gold threshold. At the same time, the label could also examine albums that were already gold or platinum released during Elvis' lifetime and target those that are close to a Platinum or a multi-platinum upgrade certification. I think one of the goals ultimately for the record label should be that they should try to position the catalog so that every album released during Elvis' lifetime is at a minimum of a gold record in time for the 40th anniversary of his passing in 2017. I don't think that's too far-fetched of an idea, considering that "Christmas Duets" sold roughly 100,000 units a year since it's release in 2008 and is already Gold. "An Afternoon In The Garden" did very well too, though I don't know exactly the numbers it was at when Custom Marketing got a hold of it. What ultimately sold that album was simply the price. I wouldn't be surprised if the recent Custom Marketing release, "Elvis Uncovered" does very well in the coming years.

What's original album classics?

The sales for Uncovered kind of amaze me. The price is right but there was no publicity and the album contains no hits, yet it's already at 57,000 plus units which might not seem like much but is almost four times the amount needed for a successful reissue.

Looked like "Elvis Rock" was selling well up until last summer, what happened to that title ?

Glad to see Elvis selling, but just who is buying these cd's is my question. Everytime I bring Elvis up in a convo with people they look at me crazy.

"Afternoon In The Garden" still kickin' it after the "Legacy" title and "PFAP" !!! Yeh baby !

Re: SoundScan (US) sales-figures

Thu Jan 17, 2013 7:21 pm

People buying these relatively low prized CD may be

i) Elvis fans just like you and I who see the CD's well stacked there, look at the contents and, say, buy them because they don't have a number of songs in their collection.

ii) Friends of Elvis fans just like you and I who, wanting to give us a present, see the CD's well stacked there, look at the contents and, say, buy them because they assume and hope we may not have a number of songs in our respective collections. LOL

iii) Other people, not Elvis FANS, WANTING TO COMPLETE THEIR RESPECTIVE COLLECTIONS. This is why a great cover, so politically correct that it scared me (lol), like, SAY, "Afternoon in the Garden", helps tremendously when deciding what ELVIS CD to buy. It sold 125,000 copies last year.

I don't see that it makes any difference who's buying. It's enough that they are buying. SONY, along with Elvis and the Colonel, are smiling.
