Believe me, limiting the selections from March and April 1960 Nashville to 5 cuts was probably the toughest task of the entire project.

One cannot top the two chosen to represent the 60s movie soundtrack era, "Can't Help Falling In Love" and "Return To Sender," and "Polk Salad Annie" and "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" were the most impressive masters made in Feb 1970.

And it hurt to have to exclude a monster hit like "My Boy."

If you are talking about getting people into Elvis, less is more. I'd even attempt to get it down to one cd. Sadly people don't have the time of patience for more than 70-80 minutes of music they are unfamiliar with, so a collection that really gets the cream is very effective.

For example I have been collecting rockabilly for years, my brother thinks its a joke, so I gave him the latest Ace Rocket In My Pocket collection, one disc out of the hundreds of great rockabilly tracks available. While he is not converted to the music he now admits it is deserving of respect and understands my passion. That was achieved with 28 well chosen tracks. He is doing me a mix of Italian prog, which I am looking forward to (no irony, I love all music, it's an expression of people in a time and place and worth hearing).

The problem with being a serious Elvis music fan is that we have to break through the whole prejudice created by the imps and the trash put out by EPE. A quality mainstream set cherry picking from the FTD sets with a title like Elvis - Listen without prejudice, might generate interest among music fans.

Just my thoughts.

The Doc's two disc "essential" track-listing is still probably the best one I have seen. Would have loved to have seen it issued by Sony as a mainstream compilation.....

That's a good alternate packaging for Elvis Presley songs. But it is by no means an Essential package. Any Essential package should include the Elvis essentials - excluding tracks like "It's Now or Never", "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", "Viva Las Vegas" and "The Wonder of You" can't make it essential. And why Two versions of "I Got a Woman" when such important material is left out? Apart from that it is a very nice set.

If the point and purpose is TWO CDs, and the topic title is a clue, then your comments are baseless.

Not one of those Apr 1960, Jul 1963 or Feb 1970 suggestions you make is better than those I selected. Believe me, I went through Elvis' catalog many, many times before I came up with my final track list.

The inclusion of "I Got A Woman" (1956) should be self-evident: a complete remake of the 1954 R&B classic by Ray Charles, heavily influential, and a lifelong Presley stage favorite from 1955 to 1977.

The live return in 1969 had to be represented. This unissued "I Got A Woman" (Aug 22 MS) is the best rendition from that stand, and shows how much Elvis had changed from the 21 year-old at his debut RCA session. It is also emblematic of how Presley focused on his seminal recordings during that 1969 season, but with a dollop of intensity that would not be equaled in the 1970s.

As for home demos, there is only room for one. "If I Loved You" from 1966 cannot be topped by any other known home recording, and it is a perfect representative of what Elvis really wanted to do with his music in the mid-sixties.

As you can see, my list is not in any way cavalier.

It is an essential distillation on two CDs.

In 2007, "Are You Lonesome Tonight" recorded by Elvis Presley in 1960 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Not that it's one of my favourites, but Are You Lonesome Tonight? would indeed be an Elvis `essential' above either I Got A woman in Doc's list.

It's Now or Never and Are You Lonesome Tonight? Have to be included...otherwise this is a pretty great 2 disc set. No one list will be perfect, but this is a nice distillation.

Aside from the absence of "It's Now or Never" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "Hurt". And those are not minor flaws in my book. The fact that so few people can agree upon what would be an essential two-disc Elvis compilation is perhaps proof of the ultimate futility of the project.

I'msure we could all make our own `essential' lists and they would all be brilliant. After all, he did have a pretty good range of songs.
I think there is need for a power ballad from the final years to round off any essential set - My Way, Hurt or similar

Note these are the essential cuts of tracks recorded in Elvis lifetime (i.e. no JXL Re-Mix), spread over 3 discs representing 3 eras of Presley's career (Pre-Army Rock n Roll years - Post-Army Induction thru Hollywood years - '68 Comeback followed by Vegas years). I believe these 3-CDs are enough Presley for either the casual fan, the fan of rock or just music in general. Every music fan should have something like this in their collection. This set includes every U.S./U.K. #1, every Top 10 U.S. hit (except "I Beg of You") and every well-known or crucial recording.

I really liked your compilation, Good Time Charlie.

Essential Elvis does not fit on 2 cds only. I've tried so many times and always find I've left something essential out. Regarding The Essential Elvis 2cd set, there are more than a few variations out there.

"You don't have to say you love me" is NOT essential. Even though it's Ernst's favourite Elvis song and it appears on EVERY love songs and hits compilation, it is a poor second best to Dusty Springfield's version. I have lost count of how many CD's this inferior performance appears on.
