Songs that would have sounded better in an another key?

Thu Nov 22, 2012 5:35 pm

The "Hey Jude discussion" made me think if there are other songs that possibly would have sounded better one key higher or lower ("I'd like to do it in C, that's ... that's where I'd like to do it better, you know" - Elvis changes key while recording Danny Boy).

Three tracks possibly would have sounded better a half step lower in my opinion:

Just call me lonesome
A little bit of green (unsure here)
Fairytale

Whar do you guys think? Any other songs?

Padre immediately springs to mind, he´s over the top on that one.

Worst 70s master ever.....I dislike Elvis voice on this one,not to mention the awful overdubbing.

Probably Love Me Love The Life I Lead as well - although Elvis's straining might simply be because he hadn't worked at the song long enough for him to feel comfortable enough with it. Fairytale is the key number here though.

Agreed. Almost shouting at one point rather than singing.

Maybe it was his mood, because i am sure he could have laid down a sensitive version while staying true to the close-to-panic feeling of the song itself. That particular message came true for me anyway.

Just call me lonesome does not do much for me, but i see where you getting at. You could be right.
A little bit of green sounds wonderful to me. A very sensitive reading. I love this song.
Fairytale, you are right. A strained and unsure vocal. I love the Memphis 1975 version though.

"Fairytale," for sure!
The 1975 live versions are much better, specially the one from May 6, 1975 ES ("Dixieland Rocks" FTD).

Golden Coins
The Love Machine
Hey, Hey, Hey

In the key he does Fairytale in, the recording is lively and exciting. That wouldn't have been true if he had sung it in a lower key. I like Fairytale as is.

Golden Coins is great as recorded, as is Hey, Hey, Hey. The Love Machine would be good in any key. Seriously, someone mentioned Early Morning Rain and I agree with that if they are talking about the live versions. The 1971 version is just fine.

You make me laugh here this morning drjohn. I'm not sure if it's intentional :)

I like Elvis intimate version. But I guess you think it´s too low.

:D

Britches and Guadalajara are two horrible songs, but Elvis´ final note on the latter track is rather impressive.

No doubt Marty Robbins would have made a superb rendition of this song (Padre), did he ever record it? Elvis rated it as one of his all time favourite songs, remember the Elvis Sails-interview from September 1958. I believe he would have done a far better job (singing) on it at let´s say the December 1973 Stax-sessions, or maybe it would have been out of place there.

The First Noel (lower key)
Fairytale (lower key)
Way Down (higher key)
Padre; Heart of Rome (lock 'em up and throw away the key)

:) I'll defend Heart of Rome, I love take 1, but Padre is tough-going, although at least he gives it some.

The key from the June 6, 1960 ATL concert of Big Boss Man was way too high. Tony Brown also starts it way too high on December 30 in ATL.
