Maybe to do with a lack of promotion.
Or limited stock on the shelves. When I bought mine from HMV, it was one of only two copies in stock. When the guy said their supplier had only sent two copies, I couldn't believe it!

I am certain that Sony are very pleased with that placement even more surprised it charted. I think it will be TOP 50 in the US next week. You now in the end it is all about marketing: if you believe in your product, and that you are right to believe so, then it will sell. Michael Jackson's "BAD 25" flopped big time around the world regarding the high expectations Sony had on this. Does this mean MJ doesn't sell anymore?! No just bad marketing. Or may be the millions MJ fans just vanished into the air...

People are fickle. This Is It can be purchased brand new on blu-ray in the UK at the moment for £1 in Poundland stores.
I'm not over-reacting. Sony could probably have made a damn fine guess at how many Prince's will sell. They know how many each and every FTD sells, and they know how many Legacy editions sell. As I have said before, people are more than happy here to run down artists on the charts for not needing to sell as many units as Elvis did and yet reach the same chart position. This is true. Those same people think it is a wonderful achievement to his #74 in the charts and that it is a sign that Elvis is selling well. #74 is nothing these days. Despite all those pre-orders, and initial purchases from all hard-core fans, it has still registered lower on the charts that Queen's Greatest Hits which has been out for more than three decades, or been out for over year if you class the remaster as a new album. It is only 14 places higher than Abba Gold which has been on the UK charts 870 weeks.
What this means is that X amount of people buy Elvis releases. And that number isn't going to grow or change no matter how much it is advertised. The only chance of that changing is if a song has been used to great effect in a blockbuster film or something like that. Prince From Another Planet, despite the video footage and despite the long awaited remixing has not proven that Elvis is a big seller. Not at all. And, I would suggest that if we look at the same charts in a couple of weeks time we will find that the album is nowhere to be seen.

Hmm, but Presley's sales over his whole catalogue would be better than those you are quoting for the above artists would they not? And bar Taylor Swift who is really mega selling these days?
It has been pointed out that over the course of time a lot of Presley's LP's gather appreciable sales as can be attested to by the gold and platinum RIAA certifications with very little chart action.
I think perhaps this indicates that Presley's sales need to be looked at differently. The charts don't tell the whole story.

A #74 position shows that their supplier was probably in the right. Anyone who wanted the item would have bought it online or pre-ordered it. What kind of promotion do you want? Sony are hardly going to spend thousands of pounds promoting something that really isn't going to sell many more copies because of the promotion. There is a small hard-core fan base who buy everything. Most other people couldn't care less anymore. No doubt the chart position is due to a very small percentage of people buying the item as a christmas present for someone is a fan of music from the era, or just a rock n roll enthusiast. The truth of the matter is that it doesn't take the sale of many more copies to make the leap from, say #150 to #74. Considering this position takes into account that nearly all fans would have bought the item this week, and all the pre-orders, it shows just how much Presley is NOT selling these days.

Not everybody shops online. That is why High Street shops still exist. What's wrong with a poster or two in the window? How much would that cost? And how many more sales would it attract to general music enthusiasts who were unaware of this release?
Every business has it's own market base, but they don't rely solely on that for sales.
The three Ps of Marketing: Product, Price, Promotion. Easy.
I was back in HMV today and there was a guy in there hunting high and low for the release. He almost bought the MSG Legacy Edition thinking it was PFAP. Good job I was there to put him right. How many more will make that mistake?
