When we lost Fatty Arbuckle, 6-29-1933, that was tough.

As far as I can remember, it was Stalin in 1953.

The Daily Express did a cartoon of him lying in state, but depicted as a pig !

I recall my father being upset by this, saying: "Whatever the man has done in his life, in death he shouldn't be portrayed as a pig !"

And then, that same month, Queen Mary died [our queen's gran].

We guessed something was amiss, that morning, when the radio stations were just playing funeral music !

Cheeky !

Did you see my reply ?

Actually, I've remembered an earlier one.

King George VI [our present queen's father] died in February, 1952.

I remember the headmaster's secretary coming into the classroom & handing a note to the teacher, Miss Martin, who made the announcement to the class.

Hello,

Being from the great state of Pennsylvania, I remember seeing this on television several times in the hours and days after this happened back on January 22, 1987. I remember my paternal grandmother passed away around the same time, about a week earlier. It's probably the first time that I first-hand witnessed and also experienced death in my family. Be warned the second clip is very gruesome.

Wow Daryl I am not surprised that you remember that so well, powerful stuff. I have never heard of Budd Dwyer, but am now wanting to find out more about him!

Wow! Gruesome indeed. I wasn't aware of this incident until your post. Incredible and sad. It's impossible to imagine what is going through people's minds when they can appear normal then carry out such an act.

I was only about 9 when that happened. I do remember, thinking back on it, that there was severe snowstorms across Pennsylvania and that school was cancelled. This likely was the reason I was home to see it.

I'm sure I'm not the only person of my age in the UK whose first death of a celebrity we remember is comedian Tommy Cooper, dying live on TV on the variety show Live From Her Majesty's which was hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck in 1984. A memorable Sunday night for all the wrong reasons.

I know I shouldn't have kept watching. Jesus!

Didn't they see it coming? Didn't they see the oddly shaped envelope? And he had it in his hands, and they didn't jump him!

I am SO messed up after that. I had fair warning, but I went and watched it.

I'm sorry you saw that as a child. Sorry for everyone who saw that, when it happened.

I think they did try to 'jump' him !

That's why he pulled the trigger prematurely, before he'd finished his planned explanatory speech.
