That date you mentioned (quite interesting BTW) would the source of it be George Klein?

It is a known date from a copy of the program, not to mention being cited in biographer Guralnick's work.

Nope! Those didn't come on the market until about 1950!

The only practical way then was to make an acetate at a radio station or recording studio.

While it is true that reel-to-reel tape recorders did not achieve general acceptance (largely thanks to Bing Crosby) until the 1950s, by the mid 1940s the wire recorder was already very popular and remained so for the next ten years or so. Furthermore, many record players for home use could also cut records: I used one at school in the early 1960s, but the technology had been around for a long time already.

Buddy Holly wasn't just good, he was GREAT. And very ambitious.

Only 22, he would have done so much. It's such a heartbreaker.
