Well done Celtic.I didn't think they had a chance even after coming so close in the Camp Nou but it just goes to show that if you roll up your sleeves, get stuck in,concentrate for 90 minutes and believe the underdog can have it's day.

I remember this moment like it was yesterday.

Great result. Wish I'd put some money on it.

Not true.

It's pretty much been established that Liverpool supporters were the first to sing the song en masse.

When the Liverpool group 'Gerry and the Pacemakers' had a number one hit with You'll Never Walk Alone in 1963, supporters standing on the Spion Kop would often sing the chart hits of the day [see YouTube clip below], and it was around this time that YNWA was adopted as LFC's anthem.

Only in much later years - as a friendly bond between Liverpool and Celtic was cemented - did Celtic fans begin to sing it with any degree of frequency.

P.S. Congrats to The Bhoys last night!

Celtic started singing You'll Never Walk Alone" in the 1950s it was first heard in Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel !!! how do i know this ? because my dad told me as he used to sing it in the old jungle back in the day although it was slightly different than gerrys rendition !!!

That is true. My Grandpa told me they used to sing it at Celtic Park in the 50's. He was a big Celtic fan and used to go to all the games when he came over here from Ireland. My Grandpa's dead now but I remember him telling me that often, when I was younger. I have no idea when Liverpool sang it, but Celtic were definitely singing it in the 50's.

Cheers daylon, maybe your grandad and my dad stood side by side in the old jungle and had a pint in one of the pubs on the gallowgate back in the day !!! :)

There is every chance, he did like a pint or ten. He would travel down from Fife to Glasgow, he barely missed a game for many years. :smt023
I have been in the jungle myself a few times with my pals who were all big Celtic men-some experience.
I've never been to the new Celtic Park-how does the atmosphere compare to the old terraced stadium?

The new celtic park is great in many ways and the atmosphere is breathtaking in the big games.its a little flat for the smaller games as you would expect.but nothin beats the old jungle it was amazing !!!

I would agree that terrace singing of this operatic original is unlikely but with other more standard versions by singers like Roy Hamilton and Frank Sinatra it is a distinct possibility that they did sing it on the terraces. I wonder if it might be related to do with death of a well loved player like Patsy Gallacher or Joe Cassidy? It would be good to have something to back it up apart from word of the fans.

Also Gordon Macrae, the lead star of Carousel, was born in the USA but to Scottish parents!

Celtic also sang Hail Hail the celts are here etc possibly in the 50's or earlier . This was based on a song called Hail Hail the gangs all here, by Irving Kaufman recorded in 1917.
So it certainly has been known that they have picked up on older/traditional songs and used them on the terraces.
