Fatty Arbuckle & Shemp Howard VITAPHONE shorts released!

Wed Nov 07, 2012 8:07 pm

:D Volume One >> http://www.wbshop.com/product/the+vitap ... rom=Search *

* These Vitaphone shorts have indeed been thru a restoration/remastering process regardless of the small print stating otherwise on the site page.
That's a frequent error on the WBShop.com site, with its web-clerks using a cookie cutter approach to set up product pages.

These films have NOT been through a restoration process. Warner may well have gone back and found different prints to those that have been available before mostly through grey market labels, but no restoration has been done on these titles.

cool,,I like Shemp,he gets a bad rep because of being compared to curly, but IMO Shemp is actually a better comedian..and yes Arbuckle is great too..

Well, does it look good, good enough to buy? It's reasonable, but it all adds up; my Amazon Wish List (which accepts any other web sites) is getting a bit out of control!

I'm a fan of Roscoe Arbuckle! I would like to know. This would make a great gift from Sandie Claws! (I won't call him "Sandy Claws" anymore; not after the storm.)

rjm (Yes, I just looked deeper, because I KNEW he was from Santa Ana, where he walked those old wooden streets, and here's a good link: http://ochistorical.blogspot.com/2011/08/fatty-arbuckle-and-oc-archives-film.html I am currently trying to find whatever musuem ended up with a bunch of silent films - not necessarily his, but some, that were filmed in Orange Co. No luck yet.)

If you read my post properly, you would know that I said that Warner may have gone back and found different prints to those that had been available from grey market labels. I didn't say Warner was a grey market label. Please read a post before giving sarcastic comments.

Just because a print has been found that is in good condition does not mean that the print has been restored. Warner store all their materials in nigh-on perfect conditions.

I have seen three out of four of those. I really like Shemp and Fatty together. Joe Besser had plans to work with Fatty too. Kind of a father son type of thing.

I've seen most if not all of these and it really is fun stuff. Vol 2 should be really cool too.

Yeah, probably even funnier with Shemp being more polished with his comedic skills!
All the shorts on Volume 2 range from 1934's My Mummy's Arms (#19)
to 1937's Taking The Count (#39).

Where can I find the real early Fatty Arbuckle stuff in good (well, as good as possible, considering their age) quality? Do you know a link? And should it be in the public domain? Or at least some?

Watching these are like looking into an ancient world. And yet, everything looks so "normal" too. I just love it! And he was great, and it's so horrible - what they did to him. He was finally let off the hook, but it was much too late, and it ended up killing him. But he was wonderful, while it lasted. And the funny stuff is . . . still funny!

A genuine star, a pioneer, and an innocent man (who received a formal apology from the jury, when he was finally acquitted.)

Any links? I would love these - the early ones, what with the holidays coming up and all, it would be a real treat! :D

Public domain prints are going to be really crappy. You really need to look for labels that can be trusted, such as Kino Video or Image Entertainment.

For those interested in early comedy, the Slapstick Encyclopdia 5 DVD set can not be recommended enough. It runs over 18 hours and is produced in part by David Shepherd, one of the best silent film archaeologists, restorers and experts in the world. The set contains some early Chaplin, Keaton, Arbuckle and more. And here's the good bit...it's selling on Amazon for just $10. Shepherd has said that the re-release of this set is a trial - if the cheaper prices get more people buying it, then more will follow. The picture quality on it is excellent for the most part (given the footage is a hundred years old), and the set is highly recommended.

Once again - avoid the public domain copies! Unless you want people's head chopped off, bits of film missing and running at the wrong speed!

I'm sorry, pmp, I didn't see your post; thank you!

At ten bucks, even if you don't watch all 18 hours, you really can't go wrong, if it looks that good! (I saw some stuff, real late - I think on a weekend night, on TCM, I think, and it was quite remarkable. Very, very early.)

Anyway, from what I've seen, and what I know of Arbuckle (and Keaton, of course), it's wonderful stuff, and it's really magical. Seeing that world . . . it's just amazing. I know some people who are quite elderly, and none of 'em were born yet! So, it's totally another world.

My wish list at amazon has been updated! :smt114

Thanks, fellas! (Sorry, pmp, for reading the posts too fast. They do argue quite a bit over there on amazon, but I think you know your stuff, and Blue is a big fan, too. Even of non-Stooge comedies! :smt002 )

rjm (One more thing, about wanting to get a good look at the early ones: my dad was told stories, when he was a child, of the man for whom he was named - his uncle. But he never knew this man, because he died when he was really only still a boy. He died in 1918, at age 18, of the Influenza Epidemic, many years before my dad was born. So, to look at HIS world, is something I have this magnetic urge to do. Thanks again!)

Fatty Arbuckle
Buster Keaton (everything)
The Little Rascals/Our Gang (all the talkies)
Stan Laurel silents
Oliver Hardy silents
Laurel & Hardy (everything except their final film)
Some Charley Chase talkies
Some Joe E. Brown
W.C. Fields (most everything)
The Three Stooges (most everything)
Shemp Howard solo

Perhaps the fact that Chaplin was a liberal and the word "Marx" would send you into a frenzy has something to do with that!
