January 15, 1977 photo from "I Got Ya, Elvis, I got Ya!"

Sun Nov 04, 2012 11:43 pm

I picked up a copy of "I Got Ya, Elvis, I got Ya!" by Betty Page at the Montreal Elvis convention yesterday for $2.00 and the photo below is listed as "Leaving for Southbrook on January 15, 1977"

I'd heard about this book for years, but had never seen it.

I used to think the book was filled with "fun stories." At some point, I came to believe these people were just downright weird. They wait outside in the cold for Elvis to come down the driveway. They follow him to the movies. They sit in the car in the cold, and wait for hours until he emerges from the movies. Then, they follow him home, and resume their sentry duty.

Then again, I involve myself in online discussions of a singer dead 35 years. Who's the weird one?

I'm reading the book now...it was an unusual life to do what they did on a regular basis...a bit weird ;-)

It's a very interesting and at times an amusing book complimented with some great one of a king photo's. I picked this up on my first visit to Memphis in 1979.

I stumbled across Page's book as a kid,

It, along with these two (and perhaps some others),

Were probably responsible for planting the seeds for wanting to visit Graceland myself someday.

Really enjoyed these books as a kid, but they're a bit silly thru adult eyes. All in good fun, though. After all, there are many different ways of being a "fan."

Great thread, Paul. Thanks.

... just a fan ....

PS - Not sure if this has ever been posted before (probably has), but it's appropriate for this thread, "Winter, January 1977, at Graceland. (All Right Reserved for photos. Source & Thanks: Ross Menoher.)

I bought the book when I visited Memphis back in 1990 (time sure flies!). I remember thinking, after I read it, that it was probably those kinds of fans (stalkers?) who forced Elvis to live in a bubble. He couldn't go anywhere without having her and her gang running after him. "I got ya, Elvis, I got ya!" In the end, she sure did....
