If you're not familiar with Chris, he's a very talented artist.

I had the chance to interview him about 10 years or so ago. He plays a wide variety of instruments. He said if it has strings or keys he can play it. And he said he's completely self taught.

And he's a very prolific songwriter. His claim is he's penned around 40,000 songs--mainly for the contemporary christian music market.

I have 7-8 albums of his--great voice.

I used to have (may still have it somewhere) a short video I taped off of a TV music video program back in the 90s with Chris talking about meeting Elvis. He said he went with a friend, and while he (Chris) managed to stay calm when Elvis came in, his friend just lost it, "Oh my--Elvis Presley!!!" It was funny to hear him tell it.

Clearly...he wrote a stone-cold classic.

I like the song and have said so in previous threads (and paid the price).

I'd call it "sophisticated country" -- for lack of a better term. I can understand why it appealed to Elvis with its unique phrasing and potential for big and powerful vocals.

Also appealing to Elvis at this time might have been a lyric like, "I traded love for what I thought was being free."

One can't go to the top of the mountain every day and Elvis knew that. I get the feeling he just liked the song and identified with it. It's a "nuance" song, bordering on novelty. It adds color, flesh, and perspective to the rest. It wasn't going to make or break him.

Please add me to the "love" column.

I love it. Clearly not Elvis' strongest moment, but I do enjoy it for what it is - and couldn't care less about what that means to others, as it is my personal opinion and taste. After all, I find no problem enjoying it and recognizing Elvis' career highlights.

Elvis sounds good singing it and clearly had fun recording it (rehearsal heard on FTD). And I do love the melody.

Great song...great performance. Elvis was awesome with songs like this.

Love it too.

I love that you put so much work into this!

As for the song, he was not gonna write another love song of the year . . . (I won't say any more. It kinda goes on and on and . . . well.)

Great research! :smt006

P.S. -- A question: in the Elvis video, that pic at 2:53-54, in the thick yellow sweater with the "Y" on it? Where is that from? I haven't seen that photo! Or, I don't recall it.

I like this song, appreciate it even more after singing it a few times this year. I saw Chris Christian as the opening act for B.J. Thomas years ago, Chris was mostly singing his religious material, but did do a medley of pop hits he had written or produced for others - but no Love Song of the Year. Also made a quip about his name, joked that it would be like being named Willie Witness. B.J. came out next, sang a bunch of his pop hits, but a few in the crowd were not pleased. "Sing about Jesus!" and a few other catcalls kind of soured the mood. I guess they were expecting it to be strictly a gospel show.

That's from "Frankie & Johnny" :)

I like the song, but more importantly so does my MOM.

Never liked it. The kind of dross that should never have been considered- he was better than that.

I like a lot of his 70's material but sadly there were too many of similar standard to this song.

Good story though.

I don´t hate or love it. However, there are several songs on the album that I do like...

I don´t hate it but IMO it´s one of the weakest songs on the album and a song I rarely listen to.

Oh--the massive void this board would have without your deeply thoughtful and well researched contributuions.

I don't mind it!

It may be something of a Pyrrhic victory, but it beats "My Boy."

I don't hate the song but I feel there seven songs in the Promised Land album that are better.

Re: "Love Song of the Year" --> Secrets Revealed at Last!

I love the song - it's my most played song from Promised Land.
I love the dubbed solo violin, and the BRILLIANT piano courtesy of Per Erik Hallin - which supports my opinion that Hallin by far is the most talented pianist ever
to attend an Elvis recording session.

What I don't like is the overall lifeless and dull sound from these sessions.
No sparkle anywhere, and the drums sound like they were recorded through wads of cotton.
As usual though, the outtakes sound way better than the official Promised Land/Good Times albums.

I prefer it to stinkers like It's Midnight and Your Love's Been A Long Time Coming, but the backing vocals should have been mixed down / out.

Renan, I love that you updated my list -- and quite nicely.

It seems I may have opened a Pandora's Box here.

Do give me credit for walking the line in my original post.

"Love Song of the Year" --> There is no in-between.

No in-between? I thought that only applied to "Yoga Is As Yoga Does."

I guess I've blown the scene.

I never said love either, I said "like". There is quite a difference.
