Age of consent and pedophilia are essentially different issues although many people often conflate them. Pedophilia is when someone has an attraction to a prepubescent child which is generally before 12. Age of consent is just that and is more a reflection of a society's given values, mores, health and standards. There's a funny joke in the new Dark Shadows movie where 18th century Barnabas Collins is disappointed that his 20th century 15 year old niece isn't married yet. "Better hurry up or you'll be an old maid." Something like that.

I'm not condoning grown adults in the 20th or 21st century having sex with people barely in their teens, I'm just pointing out this and pedophilia, child rape and molestation are different issues.

...Regarding Elvis and Priscilla, we also need to remember that Elvis was in Germany when the pair met, where the age of consent is just 14, making her over the age of consent there when they met. She was seventeen by the time she and Elvis were together for the first time in America although she still would have been underage by one year at that time according to Tennessee law.

Having a girlfriend as young as Priscilla was seems to have been pretty much a 'one-off' for Elvis.

Savile, on the other hand, appears to have been a serial offender over a long period, & with girls even younger at times !

Agreed. There is also the difference of Elvis and Priscilla were wanting to be with each other, rather than Savile allegedly groping people without their permission. There is really no comparison.

I am not sure how effective having an age of consent is, it is almost archaic. If someone wants to do it at 14 they will do it. Some 14 year olds will know the consequences, some wont. Cest la vie. But protection of children from people like Savile is a different issue.

A paedophile is a paedophile.
A man in his twenties or older should not hang out with 14-15 year olds.
These kids surely should not stay for pyama parties.
That's why Michael Jackson got into problems.
And marrying a 13 year old when in your twenties or older is still called paedophilia.

Actually, legally it's the same crime whether the person was 17 or 12.

In English law itself, there is no mention of the term "Paedophile", however, a "child" or "minor" is someone who is under 18 years of age.

It's not quite that staightforward.

A girl can legally consent to sex at 16................. even if she's classed as a 'minor' until 18.

Again, people are confusing terms. It is one thing what the law says about having sex with a minor and another to be a peodophile. Having sex with a minor doesn't not automatically mean you're a peodophile. Countries have different legislation regarding the suitable age for sexual relations. It's a rule set up by a society according to it's morals and standards. A peodophile is a medical term.

And let's make it clear I'm not defending any adult who's having sexual relations with a minor just pointing facts.

As someone who studies film and tv, I have to say I found the panorama investigation into the shelving of the newsnight investigation fascinating viewing (I say "fascinating" as it was more about BBC politics than it was about the allegations themselves). It all seems rather strange that the BBC is happy to broadcast a 60 minute investigation into the shelving of the newsnight report, but wasn't willing to show the newsnight report a year ago, which probably would have done less harm to the corporation than tonight's show. I'm not sure how or when anyone will get to the bottom of why the report was really shelved or how Savile got away with what he did for so many years. Like the phone hacking scandal, this case looks like it will rumble on for a number of years after shaking this country's media industry to the core.

It was all over the newspapers AGAIN TODAY...and up to 200+ victims alleged! many people now are going to Sue the BBC!!!
