Country Music Hall of Fame Inductees

Mon Oct 22, 2012 11:19 am

Here are the newest inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame:

Garth Brooks
Connie Smith
Hargus "Pig" Robbins

My own thoughts are that it is too soon for Garth Brooks. There are other country greats who came before Garth that are not in yet - honor them first.

Connie and Hargus (who played on Elvis records) are over-due the honor.

I can see that, but I can understand his induction too as Brooks is a phenomenon. In every story of country, there would probably be a chapter just on him - such was his effect on the industry.

I personally wouldn't look out my window to see Garth Brooks perform.

Chances are, he wouldn't look out his to see me, either.

It's great to see Garth, Connie Smith and Hargus Robbins being inducted into the CMA Hall of Fame. All are very deserving, and Garth, aside from his tremendous album sales, has been a hugely influential figure in American music. It's now 23 years since the release of his eponymous debut album, which sold ten million copies domestically, setting a trend that he continued strongly -- both, with regards to sales, and the quality of his music. Which may have leaned towards pop music, or was played with rock sensibilities, taking his brand of new American music to stadiums, and putting on incredible shows that appealed to young, and old, alike. Hallmarks of Garth at his best. And, although he tried a few changes of direction and took occasional chances with his music that didn't necessarily work, his presence, I believe, is sorely missed in the country music field and in the wider world of music.

Connie Smith, Hargus Robbins and Garth were all inducted back in April.

Someone said that about Elvis once. I don't think he was joking either.

On the other side of the coin, I couldn't believe he wasn't already in.

I've never been a big Garth Brooks fan, but hell, what more does a guy have to do? Conway Twitty didn't make it until 1999, six years after he passed. That never made sense, either.
