This is probably Bowie's best song of the 80s - profoundly moving.

Great band "Deacon Blue", daylon. Still active today [they've just released a new album titled 'The Hipsters'].

They were really good at combining catchy melodic hooks, with lyrics that were not afraid to deal with the harsh realities of life.

Lorraine McIntosh was one foxy lady too!

No it was '79 but perhaps the 12 incher came out the following year AYE :smt006 Hey my Friend , this is a good topic but would you mind if my contributions are based just on 12 inch records ?

Do as you wish, Rob, as long as they were issued as singles in the 80's originally.

As far as 12" ABBA singles are concerned; Lay All Your Love On Me was a pretty unique one - in that it was exclusively issued in the larger single format only.
Indeed, at the time it was released (1981), it was the highest ever charting UK 12" single.

Yes, one of Madonna's very best. Her vocals are sublime and the arrangement just perfect.
Possibly, along with Justify My Love, her most controversial single ever.

There are so many iconic Madonna songs from a decade she dominated, I would be hard pushed to pick a favourite.
But this 1989 performance of Express Yourself [featuring live vocals] symbolizes everything great about her.

(Note the Presley-inspired choreography and "It goes something like this" line on the intro).

Anyone remember this one-hit wonder from 1980?

Cheesy song perhaps, but the phrasing is just beautiful [pardon the pun].

Guess this one

You must be mistaken,
It couldn't have been
You couldn't have seen him yesterday.
He's doing some deal down in Baltimore now,
I hate it when he's away.

You must be mistaken, I'm sure that you are.
There's more that one care with stickers on
And lots of young guys wear corduroy shirts,
And I'd know if he hadn't gone.

Take that look off your face.
I can see through your smile.
You would love to be right.
I bet you didn't sleep good last night,
Couldn't wait to bring all of that bad news to my door.
Well, I've got news for you: I knew before.

If I'm not mistaken, I know when it came,
In fact I can name the very day.
When we started to plan the future and all,
Joe started to pull away.

No, I didn't dig deep.
I did not want to know.
Well, you don't interfere
When you're scared of the things you might hear.
Bet you think I should end this
Right now as you would do.
Well, my hard bitten friend,
I am not you.

Take that look off your face!
I can see through your smile.
You would love to be right.
I bet you didn't sleep good last night,
Couldn't wait to bring all of that bad news to my door.
Well, I've got news for you
I knew before.

I can see through your smile.
You would love to be right.
I bet you didn't sleep good last night,
Couldn't wait to bring all of that bad news to my door.
Well, I've got news for you
I knew before!
