Love this song, grew up with the Elvis' live version to be honest, but my question is what does the line 'pumped a lot of pain...' mean? Without wishing to offend anybody I always thought Elvis sang 'humped a lot of babes' (no explanation needed there) it's only later when I've listened to CCR's original then back at Elvis' Madison Square version I realised what they were singing but apart from hazarding a guess at 'pumping gas?' I have no idea what it means and the internet seems undecided too. So anyone any ideas?

The line refers to propane gas. " Pumped a lot of pane down in New Orleans".
