Ella Fitzgerald's 100th Birthday...Oh no!

Details have been given of the series of releases being made available in celebration of what would have been Ella Fitzgerald's 100th birthday, including a 100 song "best of" the Decca and Verve years coming out next month. Other things we are meant to get excited over is the digital release of the Complete Original Song Books - a set that was released on CD a long time ago, and yet another re-release of the Ella & Louis duets (albeit combining the Decca and Verve recordings for the first time).

But there are also worrying signs. Part of the (typo-ridden) press release tells us... "Verve will release a new album featuring Fitzgerald's classic vocal recordings accompanied by new orchestral arrangements by the London Symphony Orchestra." Don't tell us - "it's what she always would have wanted!" Sadly the same thing was done for Ella's 90th birthday too, and its high charting position probably has ensured this second volume. That first volume was both better and worse than what we are promised here. Firstly, not all tracks were overdubbed (hurray!), but on the other hand some of the ones that were had never been released before in any form (booo!)

Anyway, the full press release is here: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ella-fitzgeralds-centennial-year-commemorated-with-a-global-ella-100-celebration-300422384.html

Sadly the Love Letters from Ella CD used some unreleased studio recordings and added the orchestra, with the producer basically admitting online that they were simply leftovers from Pablo albums where too much material was recorded, and so nothing wrong with the originals.
