Have a "Winter Romance" with Dean Martin
Dean Martin's "Winter Romance." It's secular, it's seasonal and it's so smooth you'll want to sip it over ice by the fire. Released in November of 1959 at the height of Dino's cool lounge years, this delightful collection was the boozing crooner's first holiday foray for Capital Records...

Over the weekend, Willie Nelson's excellent Songbird, Six Hours at Pedernales and the superb collection, Naked Willie. Robbie Williams' Escapology and Sing When You're Winning. Miles Davis's brilliant Porgy & Bess and Filles de Kilimanjaro. Bing Crosby: The Complete United Artists Sessions
And, right now, a little playlist with Professor Green "At Your Inconvenience," Jay-Z and Alicia Keys "Empire State of Mind," Jay-Z and Kanye West "Otis," Jamie Cullum "Gran Torino, " Willie Nelson and Lionel Richie "Easy," and Willie Nelson and Aerosmith "Once is Enough."

Re: Last album you listened to.
Songbird is a lovely album. I've been having a marathon of rather unusual big band albums: one with Kay Starr and Count Basie, the one with Bing Crosby and Basie (with a swing version of Snowbird), and the rare Duke Ellington album featuring songs from the musical All American. The latter is very uninspired, and there is good reason why it hasn't been releasd on CD!greystoke wrote:Over the weekend, Willie Nelson's excellent Songbird, Six Hours at Pedernales and the superb collection, Naked Willie. Re: Last album you listened to.
I just got a "new" CD player, as it happened, on March 16 (it was no coincidence, actually). It was never used. It had only been used for the radio, with a tiny pillow speaker. The CD player still had the styrofoam thing in it, for protection. It had never, ever been used. And it came with awesome yet small speakers that also had never been used. It belonged to my mom, and I would never use it; I had refused it. It was not mine. My dad just gave it to me the other night, and he hooked it up, whether I wanted to or not.
Well, I took the styrofoam out, and put in Disc One of I Believe.
I listened to it in the dark, later that night.
I really felt like I was in Heaven, floating on a cloud. The sound was other-worldly.
rjm
P.S. -- I had been listening to CDs mostly through a TV set: a good one with good speakers, but a TV set. (I now have the pillow speaker under my pillow. Not connected.)

Re: Last album you listened to.
I have been listening to Paolo Nutini's Sunny Side Up CD a lot over the last few days. I'm not sure if Nutini has had much success out of the UK, but this is a fun album with some wonderful songs on it, including his jungle book-inspired hit Pencil Full Of Lead (he had been singing I Wanna Be Like You in concert for some years prior to the arrival of his self-penned homage). But it's far from the highlight of the album, that surely is the wonderful No Other Way. I realise that his accent is difficult to understand, so for those not used to it, I've found a video of that great song with the lyrics printed!
..
He seems to have been very quiet since that album emerged back in 2009. I sincerely hope we hear more from him soon.

He's great! What accent is that? Can't quite place it.poormadpeter wrote:I have been listening to Paolo Nutini's Sunny Side Up CD a lot over the last few days. Re: Last album you listened to.
I think he is from Glasgow, but part Italian. Something like that. He was about 20 on that recording, but sounds more like 50. A strange voice, but wonderful singer and song.rjm wrote:He's great! Re: Last album you listened to.
Thanks, really. I just spent an hour or so on YouTube, exploring Scottish accents (tough process, but there are tutorials, honestly) and more Scottish music (which I always loved). Lotta bagpipes, but really, it's very, very beautiful. I had thought the best non-American voices generally came from Ireland, but there are exceptions!poormadpeter wrote:I think he is from Glasgow, but part Italian. Something like that. As to his accent - not to mention the vocal presentation, still sounded a wee bit different!
Thanks, again. I like this guy.

P.S. -- "50"? Naw. He sounds WAY older than 50! Great, though.
P.P.S. -- Back on topic: listened to this yesterday, on my IPod. Both discs, "Who Wants To Live Forever," "Everybody Hurts," "Hymn to Her," Rod Stewart's "Love Minus Zero," etc., etc. Annie Lennox singing "just like Elvis Presley, singing live in Las Vegas, where did you go?" Go figure . . .
