I agree completely, Ken. I thought All is Lost was a magnificent film.keninlincs wrote:Last night we watched "All Is Lost"with Robert Redford. What a film and what a star!
Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner's intuition, and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

I'll certainly be buying All is Lost on Blu-ray and hope to see both the film, director, score and Robert Redford nominated for Oscars tomorrow. I bought a few Blu-rays this week, however; The Graduate, Stoker and the original version of The Fly. I watched The Fly last night, and enjoyed it tremendously in what I would say is very good quality for a film that may not boast the strongest source elements. There's some good bonus features, too, although nothing new. But The Return of the Fly and Curse of the Fly look great in the documentary footage.jak wrote:I hesitated getting the blu ray of All Is Lost. Not sure why.Based on the reviews here I will get this ordered today from Amazon.

Sorry to say but "The Graduate" is another classic movie I never really cared for. Any more infos about "She"? Can't find it on imdb. Maybe I'll go and see "All Is Lost" within the next couple of days.greystoke wrote:I'll certainly be buying All is Lost on Blu-ray and hope to see both the film, director, score and Robert Redford nominated for Oscars tomorrow. I've got all the Hammer Blu-rays released in the UK, Ken, and would say The Mummy is excellent in every area. The picture quality is clean, sharp and has a nice grain structure. The aspect ratio seems perfect to me, and is in the original theatrical release of 1:66:1. The bonus features are great, also -- a documentary on Bray studios, another on the Hammer repertory company and a second film, Stolen Face, which is good in itself. I'm sure you've seen this one, though. But I couldn't recommend this one highly enough. Plus, I'm very fond of the film. Which always helps! But the release of Hammer films on Blu-ray has slowed down a bit after a great flurry of releases.keninlincs wrote:I order Hammers "The Mummy" on blu- ray from amazon,do you have it?i read it is now at the correct aspect ratio, wonder what your thoughts are on it?greystoke wrote:I'll certainly be buying All is Lost on Blu-ray and hope to see both the film, director, score and Robert Redford nominated for Oscars tomorrow. The Reptile is such a great little horror -- so simply conceived, being just another take on The Wolf Man, but very effective and brilliantly directed. It's one of my favourites from Hammer.keninlincs wrote:Thanks i look forward to getting it tomorrow or friday, shame they have alowed the releases down somewhat, but it gave me a chance to catch up on the releases. The only other i have yet to get is "The Reptile"greystoke wrote:I've got all the Hammer Blu-rays released in the UK, Ken, and would say The Mummy is excellent in every area. I finished "S-VHS" last night and got seasick from it. Somehow it didn't appeal to me. Very few memorable scenes. Rather forgettable.

The Wolf of Wall Street! Martin Scorcese back in blistering form! His best movie since Goodfellas the critics claimed, bold words but for once Im in complete agreement with them, three hours just flew by in this tale of excess, its still early January and Im betting this will be in the running for my favourite of the year come december.

Last night I watched "The World's End", the third collaboration of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost after "Shaun Of The Dead" and "Hot Fuzz". I have to say I was rather disappointed. I never got into the fuzz about "Shaun Of The Dead" and still don't like it after the second viewing. Watched "Hot Fuzz" three times and I have to say this is the one out of the three I like the most. But boy, Simon Pegg didn't age very well.

Re: last movie you watched
I found The Wolf of Wall Street to be a truly sensational film that's directed with real vigour and features Leonardo DiCaprio's most audacious performance to date. It's long, perhaps even excessive, but that's by design, whilst the narrative arc isn't necessarily that of a cautionary tale, because this film very much celebrates Scorsese's latest sect of anti-heroes. DiCaprio goes from ingenue to the king of the financial jungle with total ease and is clearly relishing in a role that brings no subtlety, but plenty of opportunity to revel in a role that's totally off the hook. Jonah Hill is splendid here, too; all teeth and glasses, looking dopey, but playing shrewd and keen on debauchery of all types. Who would have thought Hill would be an actor with two Oscar nominations to his name and a growing range that's making him very reliable and sought after. Matthew McConnaughey has a small role here, as drug-fuelled, oddball trader, whose gaunt appearance, ticks and mannerisms make him completely unforgettable despite appearing in only a few scenes. McConnaughey has also developed into a fine actor, having relied so long on his looks, charm and physicality, but sought enough challenges to begin making a mark -- which he's certainly done of late. But this is DiCaprio's show, and his powerhouse performance is compelling and unrelenting throughout the three hour running time. Whilst Scorsese has fashioned a film that's not far removed from Casino or Goodfellas, and surely ranks among his most arresting films of the past fifteen years. It's superbly shot, using fixed cameras, fast panning, freeze frames and breaking the fourth wall amidst faux docu-footage and a nod to viewers who are going along for the journey in a story that's outrageous in every respect. The Wolf of Wall Street certainly deserves its Oscar nods, although, like American Hustle, I feel there's more surface-level stuff here, without much subtext. Whilst the pertinent question may be, does this film ultimately condone or revel in the excess on screen? Either way, it's a tremendous film and one that I recommend very highly.
Re: last movie you watched
I saw The Night of the Hunter at the cinema yesterday, which was a real treat. There's been a few posts discussing this film lately, so without repeating what's been said, the newly remastered digital print looks simply terrific. It was also a complete sell-out with people being turned away.

Black Narcissus is an extraordinary film -- Powell and Pressburger at their best, Jack Cardiff, too; his cinematography was glorious in this film. Deborah Kerr gave one of her very best performances; she's quite brilliant here, in fact. Saying little, but conveying everything the viewer needs to know with expressions and looks. I haven't seen Just You and Me, Kid for a long, long time, though.

Re: last movie you watched
Started watching "Three And Out" starring the fabulous Colm Meaney and a wonderful Mackenzie Crook. Gotten very well entertained.
I watched "The Wolf Of Wall Street" last night, and boy! What a ride it was! A few people left the theatre maybe because it was too obscene or so. What a shocking, disturbing and unbelievably entertaining movie! Leo plays his arse off and I hope he'll get the well-received Oscar this year! Why Jonah Hill received an Oscar nomination for this is beyond me - for constantly smoking and opening his codpiece? Anyway, highly recommended - but not for prude and easily offended people.

I haven't seen Three and Out and can't even recall this one. Had to look it up there. Glad you liked The Wolf of Wall Street -- it's a bit more edgy than The Secret of My Success! lol

Re: last movie you watched
Some of the imagery has been stabalised and newly rendered where there were problems with the source -- mainly, the Angel of Death sequence, which has been given lightning effects and a new background. I think it looks great on the whole, maybe a bit obvious around the Angel of Death, although the original/untouched version wasn't included as an alternative. But there's comparisons in a feature that shows how - and why - the new effects were added. I think it was a good decision and a creative one, given it's the only Hammer release to have been afforded such. And with an upgrade to Blu-ray, problematic source material is more obvious. However, I believe that more was initially wanted of this scene but budget and production limitations proved limiting. Which was another reason to validify the work done here.keninlincs wrote:No I dont have it on Blu I have the dvd, didnt know there were new special effects.i would be interested to know more infogreystoke wrote:I thought the Bray documentary was great; one of the best on all the recent Hammer releases.
