“Electrifying.” “The biggest star in America.” “A giant miracle puppet.” That's how the paper described Elvis Presley — wearing a white jumpsuit “with a Belafonte neckline,” white boots and “a sash sliding down his hips” — during a 1970 Las Vegas concert at the International Hotel. This was a revamped Presley — the paunch was gone; the hip-grinding, spectacularly back. “He works straight from the crotch, bumping his way shamelessly he crouches with legs spread to the audience,” WWD noted on February 20. “He does the world’s best white boogaloo.” And while the singer’s manager banned all photography of Presley in costume or on stage, the paper managed to print a whole series from the show, which “were taken with all the secrecy and trenchcoats of a spy movie.”

The "paunch" reference is extremely odd considering that Elvis was pretty much physically perfect in 1968 and 1969. Perhaps they were referring to the paunch he was sporting in movies like "Clambake"? Either that or they could see into the future. :?

People see what they want to see sometimes too. I remember my grandmother saying that Elvis looked Fat in TTWII. One thing is for certain,
we will all be really thin one day.

I added the title and credits to your discovery. Elvis in Women's Wear Daily? Who would have thought that?

The photo must be near the end of a show, as Presley looks a bit spent.

The magazine's online author, Lau, is clearly a bit lacking in her skills as a journalist.

What she should have written in 2010 was something like: "This was a revitalized Presley -- no paunch (yet), and the hip-grinding back in spectacular fashion."

Thanks for the find!

Thanks. That´s a nice reference for the future, in case the article disappears in the future.

This is the most interesting part: "the paper managed to print a whole series from the show". Now, if someone could find that paper...
