November 14, 1970 by... Bonja?

Wed Feb 05, 2014 10:04 pm

Was just browsing through some of my files and bumped into these three very well-known photos taken during the evening show on November 14, 1970 in LA - would it be correct to assume these are Ed Bonja's photos? The first photo was used on an official product, on the cover of the Camden album "You'll Never Walk Alone" and I assume they'd only use photos from an "official source" back then... decades later also FTD used a photo on one of their releases that covered some of the Nashville '71 recordings ("I Sing All Kinds").

I've personally always liked the photos - they have a fairly unusual look to them. If these come from Bonja's camera, I wonder why he hasn't unleashed more from the same show? Has anyone seen more than these three?

I'm pretty sure they are Ed Bonja's photos. They are a bit better than his usual work.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing. :) Here are three additional ones that I could find.

By November, he'd learned to point the lens in Elvis' direction.

Thanks for the comments and additional photos!

The middle one looks like it was used as an 'official' postcard, the type we've often seen from the 60's and 70's (with the "season's greetings" text). If you put these photos next to all the other known shots from the evening show in LA, they definitely stand out and I think in a good way - so even if Bonja wasn't really a match for people like Alverson, Hill and the like, he had his moments every now and then. He should certainly dig deeper for new shots from his archives instead of always use the more known ones in his publications and site (http://www.edbonja.com/).

I have to admit that the Bonja photos from the matinee of the same day are pretty good too... :)

I don´t think these are Bonja´s photos. Is there any proof that they are? No photos from these shows are in any of his four books. The book Standing Room Only lists his album cover photos, but neither Love Letters From Elvis or You´ll Never Walk Alone or I Got Lucky are among those. (It also erroneously lists the cover photo of Today album as being taken by Bonja, but it isn´t.)

You are of course right, "fool" - there is no actual proof that these are indeed Bonja shots. But... according to this topic, Bonja started photographing Elvis in September 1970 (although for only one show) and also covered pretty much the whole November tour, including both the afternoon and evening show in LA; --> The Shows That Bonja Shot!

Unfortunately, the photos in the topic aren't visible anymore so that's no help other than confirming that Bonja was there for both shows...

The problem is indeed still on the fact that we haven't seen him personally use the shots in his own publications, not even on his site... Parker was never too keen on crediting anyone when their photos were used by RCA/EPE, so if Bonja wasn't behind the camera on those cool shots, who was? Did Parker "hire" two 'official' photographers to photograph the show(s)? Maybe "Tom Wilson" can re-post the LA 1970 shots so we could see what they actually look like... that could solve something.

Lastly, and not that this is proof of any kind but as an interesting detail - what we've seen from Bonja's photos, he was also capturing spotlights in his photos, sometimes even pretty much exactly the same way as we see on the photos in this topic... here's a very well-known example and it should definitely be his photo. There's an 'alternate' on his site, and some more from the same tour (Elvis wearing the red jumpsuit) where we see the same spotlight "effect".

This photo was used for a bonus calendar that came inside the "Memories Of Christmas" LP (CPL1-4395), issued in 1982.

Thanks, Mister Moon.

So the picture on Scott's first post isn't actually part of THESE? There were many of them made in the 60's(?)/70's but as I've never collected them I didn't even realize that one wasn't actually "real" - as in, one done during Elvis' time.

I assume the calendar/album doesn't give any photographer credits either?

I have checked both the album and the calendar, and there's no photographer credit. Here's a good scan (the back side is blank) :

Also, it wasn't part of the yearly pocket calendars RCA issued between 1963 and 1980 :

All the pocket calendar photos on the upper row are by Ed Bonja (except the second from left ;) ) and on the second row two first from left are his.

Thanks Steve, and thanks again Mister Moon for further infos.

Even if Bonja started photographing Elvis in late 1970, it seems it was only '72(ish) when they started plastering his photos on 'official' product (from EPE merchandise to LP/single sleeves). The LA '70 photos in this topic were used in LP's in '71 but for now, I think it'll remain a mystery who actually took them...

It's getting time for Ed Bonja to bring out a book that does his work real justice. And with some new photo's please.

Where is the 72 tour book....?...?????

Ed Bonja's photos have allowed me to have images from some of the concerts I attended that I otherwise would not have. So I'm not gonna complain too loudly.
