Loving You recording session

Fri Aug 23, 2013 2:21 am

Is this a new photo? I don´t recall seeing this one before.

From the December 1957 issue of Dig magazine, now on eBay:

New to my eyes and seems to be from the Paramount Scoring Stage in Los Angeles, perhaps on 1-16-1957 (Wed).

New to my eyes as well, and it´s only the second photo we have from this particular session.

Exactly which dates did Elvis record at the Paramount Scoring Stage during Loving You?
In Ernst Jorgensen´s "A Life in Music" it says January 15-18 and January 21-22.

In Tunzi´s Elvis Sessions (1993 edition) it says January 15-18 while January 21-22 was at Radio Recorders.

Anybody know which is correct??

So far we have photos from three sessions at Paramount.

Do we know exactly what date Lizabeth Scott was in the studio with Elvis because the first photo is from that session.

Best guess is Lizabeth Scott, Wendell Corey and director Hal Kantor all visited on the first session day, 1-15 (Tuesday), where Elvis has on the snazzy tie. Each had other duties to attend to that week, so getting some PR photos would need to be done right away.

All editions of Elvis Sessions incorrectly note Radio Recorders as the location of the 1-21 and 1-22 sessions. They were held on the Paramount Scoring Stage.

The photos where Elvis has no tie -- like the "new" one above -- could be from 1-16 to 1-18 (Wed to Fri) or 1-21 to 1-22 (Mon to Tue), but I'll bet they are from 1-16 (Wed).

The middle photo you post is likely not from a Paramount session but a get-acquainted meeting, probably held on 1-15 (Monday). The men are mostly formal in their dress and one doesn't see any musicians, instruments or any other music-related details. There are additional photos where Elvis is in the same clothes, walking out of the scoring stage with producer Hal Wallis, and then riding bikes around Paramount with cousin Gene Smith and pal Cliff Gleaves.

---

As far as dates, after arriving in Los Angeles on 1-11 (Friday), Elvis has a busy month, starting the next day:

"Loving You"-related work, January 1957
1-12 (Sat) - RCA session at Radio Recorders, West Hollywood
1-13 (Sun) - RCA session at Radio Recorders, West Hollywood

On your 2009 topic we do not see a:

- detailed timeline of January 1957 work related to "Loving You" project
- confirmation of the "Loving You" error in all three editions of Elvis Sessions
- reasons for defining the visit by Scott, Corey and Kantner to 1-15 (Tue)
- suggesting the other scoring stage images are from 1-16 (Wed)

Please let me know if any of the above appeared in your topic.

Incidentally, in revisiting your post, you imply the guitar slapping photos to Elvis' taping of "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear." But these images were taken at Radio Recorders, and the Mann and Lowe tune was cut at Paramount on 1-16-1957 (Wed).

The pictures (by Bill Avery) must date to the 1-19-1957 (Sat) session where Elvis is working on "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You." Also, the "unknown" at piano in those photos is likely Paramount conductor and music arranger Walter Scharf.

At the end of the day, all I did was make a detailed effort to answer the questions from bripet56.

Thanks.
