Pictures of Elvis with songwriters...

Sun Jun 02, 2013 1:54 am

Hello,

I've seen some of the threads in the Picture Section pertaining to pictures of Elvis with Gold records, etc. and just wanted to start a thread that pertained to pictures of Elvis with songwriters who wrote songs that Elvis recorded or performed. I came up with a list of songwriters that I'm aware of that were photographed with Elvis and also wrote songs that Elvis recorded or performed. Here's the list:

Ben Weisman (57 songs, I believe Elvis recorded)
Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller ("Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Love Me" among many others)
Eddy Arnold ("You Don't Know Me" and "I'll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms)")
Dottie Rambo ("If That Isn't Love")
Mae Boren Axton ("Heartbreak Hotel")
Billy Strange ("Memories," "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard," "A Little Less Conversation")
Paul Anka ("My Way")
Paul McCartney ("Get Back," "Hey Jude," "Yesterday" and "Lady Madonna")
John Lennon ("Get Back," "Hey Jude," "Yesterday" and "Lady Madonna")
George Harrison ("Something")
Red West ("You'll Be Gone," "That's Someone You Never Forget," "If You Think I Don't Need You," "If Every Day Was Like Christmas," "Holly Leaves And Christmas Trees" "Seeing Is Believing," "Separate Ways," and "If You Talk In Your Sleep")
Charles Hodge ("You'll Be Gone" and "That's Someone You Never Forget")
Lamar Fike (Nora Fowler) ("It's Your Baby, You Rock It")
Larry Gatlin ("Help Me" and "Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall")
Greg Gordon ("Bringin' It Back")
Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line")
Junior Parker ("Mystery Train")
Hank Snow ("I'm Movin' On")
Carl Perkins ("Blue Suede Shoes")
Donnie Sumner ("Mr. Songman" and "I Miss You")
Willie Dixon (aka Brook Benton) ("Doncha' Think It's Time")
Bobby Darin ("I'll Be There")
Dudley Brooks ("We'll Be Together" and "Mama")
Charles O'Curran ("We'll Be Together, "Mama" and "Dainty Little Moonbeams")

Feel free to add pictures of Elvis with various songwriters or add songwriters to the list. I will amend my post to include other songwriters I may have forgotten. I don't want to include one-liner songs though.

Great idea Daryl..
Tony Joe White for sure needs to be on that list.
Wrote some tunes that Elvis done, most know the ones, and agree
that Tony's style of writting fit Elvis quite well.

... I for one, sure wish Tony Joe's "A Rainy Night In Georgia" had been recorded,
by ELvis he would have nailed that one i believe!

Sorry but no pictures of them together that I've ever seen, but with the internet these day you never know
what might show up!?!

I'm sure there are other photos out there of Elvis with other songwriters besides those I've listed (Neil Diamond, Chuck Berry, Mac Davis, and Tony Joe White come to mind). Then of course there are some close calls such as Fats Domino, who was photographed with Elvis and wrote several songs but he didn't write "Blueberry Hill" though Elvis did do a few lines of some of Domino's compositions. Another photo that I'm surprised has never surfaced is a photo of Elvis with recording engineer Bill Porter.

Oh and for reference, here's my list of songwriters and the known photograph dates.

Ben Weisman - Hollywood - 1967, picture appeared in Ken Sharp's book "Writing For The King" (Page 60)
Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller (1957 - Elvis holding sheet music for "Jailhouse Rock" all three looking at it, picture appeared in Ken Sharp's book "Writing For The King" (Page 20)
Eddy Arnold (photographed with Elvis in November 1955 in New York upon Elvis signing with label. Also photographed with Elvis in California in 1957. (1957 photo appeared in "Writing For The King" - Page 185)
Dottie Rambo (photo appeared on page 341 in "Writing For The King")
Mae Boren Axton (photo appeared on page 10 in "Writing For The King")
Billy Strange (photo appeared on page 197 in "Writing For The King")
Paul Anka (photo appeared on page 299 in "Writing For The King")
Paul McCartney (photos appeared on page 90-91 of Joe Tunzi's "Beatles '65" book)
John Lennon (photo appeared on page 90 of "Beatles '65")
George Harrison (photo appeared on page 90 of "Beatles '65")
Red West (simply too numerous to list due to close association Presley had with West)
Charles Hodge (simply too numerous to list due to close association Presley had with Hodge)
Lamar Fike (Nora Fowler) (simply too numerous to list due to close association Presley had with Fike)
Larry Gatlin (photograph of Elvis with members of the Imperials - February, 1971)
Greg Gordon (photograph of Elvis with members of the Imperials - July / August, 1971)
Johnny Cash (Million Dollar Quartet photo from December, 1956 and December, 1957 photo of Elvis backstage at Grand Ol' Opry)
Junior Parker (WDIA Goodwill Show - December 6, 1957)
Hank Snow (photographed several times with Elvis)
Carl Perkins (Million Dollar Quartet - December 4, 1956 and June, 1956 as well)
Donnie Sumner (numerous times as a member of J.D. Sumner & The Stamps Quartet)
Willie Dixon (aka Brook Benton) (December 6, 1957)
Bobby Darin (photographed together backstage at Cloisters nightclub in spring of 1960)
Dudley Brooks (a few recording session photos from March, 1961 for "Blue Hawaii")
Charles O'Curran (photographed with Elvis in several early 1960's recording session soundtracks.)

It should be noted there is no known image of Harrison and Presley together, really. And Brook Benton only "borrowed" Willie Dixon's name for the one song above, at the suggestion of co-writer Clyde Otis, who also wrote with Dixon.

Unless I am mistaken there is a fab photo with Otis Blackwell (in 1960), unless it is a fake or mis-stated(?)

I posted a photo, on my FB group recently, which I thought was Elvis with Otis Blackwell and I have asked my co admin manager to dig it out for me, lol. It may well turn out not to be Otis Blackwell but that is what I had it labelled as. I am confident the experts here will tell me who it is pictured with Elvis.

this is the photo I was referring to. I assume now it is not Otis Blackwell. If anyone knows who it is shaking hands with Elvis I would be interested to know. Thanks in advance.Image

It's not Otis Blackwell. This is the great songwriter:

IIRC, your photo was taken backstage at the Folies Bergere or the Casino de Paris in January 1960.

No idea who the man with the cap may be, perhaps someone working at the theater.

Otis Blackwell never met Elvis. Blackwell was shy, and also held a somewhat superstitious belief that Elvis would stop recording his songs if they ever met. The (perhaps apocryphal) story I've heard is that Elvis even drove to Blackwell's house, but Blackwell wouldn't come out to meet him.

Its a cool subject matter, particularly for the "Picture Section" of the forum, aren't we going to add the pictures?

I'll go first then.

I agree, Julian, that it is a cool subject matter but at the same time, looking at the list of songwriters I put together, it's also very sad that Elvis didn't have more of a hands on connection to all the great songwriters of the day. Elvis should have had the freedom to be able to call up any songwriter he wanted and request material from that songwriter. I'm sure there are others that need to be added to my list, but unfortunately, photos haven't yet surfaced. I'd like to see a photo of Elvis and Burt Bacharach after Elvis' opening night show on July 31, 1969 or a session photo of Elvis and Don Robertson in the early 1960s or a picture of Elvis with Del Shannon in August, 1969 or a picture of Neil Diamond and Elvis in January, 1970. The photo that I think a lot of people are familiar with in regard to Otis Blackwell is him writing a song while a picture of Elvis singing "Memories" from the informal segment of the 1968 TV Special is in the background. It was used on the back of an Otis Blackwell album done shortly after Elvis died that featured many the songs Elvis recorded that Otis wrote.

I think it was Gordon Lightfoot, who was quoted in the liner notes to a greatest hits compilation of his done about 10 years ago, when he said that he had the opportunity to meet Elvis but he never was too big into meeting other celebrities, so he passed on the offer.
