I'm not an architect (and I don't play one on TV), but the window may be a remnant from an earlier remodeling, that pushed out the back wall of the house.

Why else would an oversize bathroom window overlook a grand staircase?

This makes sense. I would love to see some orignial plans how the house used to look like.
