It could well be from the day he got a Lee County Sheriff's badge in Tupelo, 12-29-1970:

It can't have been taken prior to 1-16-71 as he's wearing the Jaycees medallion. You can see this in the larger frame of the pic in the 70's box booklet.

If you would post the less-cropped image, that would be helpful.

Maybe this other photo is from the same day? If so, looking at the wall behind Elvis, this could be from the backstage at the International hotel.
