Here's a neat shot from the Mid-South Fair in 1956 -- has it been seen before?

”Man, You Are The Most”
Elvis Presley, a young man with sideburns and a wiggle, caught the Dennis Day act yesterday at the Mid-South Fair Centennial's “Stars over Dixie” variety show and patted an arm afterward. Day, who normally sings Irish songs, imitated a jumping Japanese wearing blue suede shoes imitating our Elvis. The crowd loved it and so did Elvis.
Great candid. He looks so happy and healthy. It's photos like this that make it hard to view photos of the mid 70s. I see pictures of Brad Pitt and think, he's older than Elvis. How can he look so young? Just think if Elvis had taken care of himself, stoped, or cut back on all the medicians and had a personal trainer. He would have made Pitt look like a garbage Pitt!! Just so sad how it all started going down hill after Aloha. A slow and painful end to a man who gave everything he had to give.

All this time later I come across a local news report from the next day which actually comments on what Elvis was wearing at the Fair . . . and what he said on stage while standing with singer Dennis Day.
Neither were what I knew or expected!
A $5,500 'Joke' Cracked By Elvis (Picture on Page 8, Section II)
An oddly garbed Elvis Presley went to the Mid-South Fair Centennial yesterday and managed to make a small joke about his loss of S5,500 to a young woman who definitely is not one of his fans.
The teenagers' delight, clad in a sport shirt, what seemed to be tight-fitting Navy trousers, and shoes decorated with drawings, appeared briefly with singer Dennis Day at the Stars Over Dixie show.
Ambling to the microphone, the rock and roll king asked, “Is there anybody here I can lay my head on their shoulder and have my picture taken?"
The star was referring to his out-of-court settlement with Miss Robbie Moore of 431 Stonewall, who threatened legal action after Elvis published a picture that showed his head on her shoulder. The photo appeared in Presley’s fan magazine, Elvis Presley Speaks.
Just for fun tried to see if the litigious pages from Elvis Presley Speaks were online.
Kismet! The "awful" photos from the Gridiron Restaurant are below. It's really sad that anyone thought a lawsuit was appropriate.
Plus I learned the text was written by Memphis- Press-Scimitar reporter Robert Johnson, and the photographs were taken by the Memphis Commercial Appeal's Robert Williams.
