I uploaded this years ago! It's on board in the canteen! Unsure what date it is from, but nonetheless, it's a great rare photo! Cheers!

We all know what had happened in his life some 6 weeks prior, granted he looks slim and healthy but his eyes are more than a little sad. This is not a happy man!drjohncarpenter wrote:It appears mine is uncropped and better quality. He sure looks great.

Uncropped yes, but better quality? It may not have the scratches but it's pixelated and obviously blown up from a much smaller image. Comparing the two as shown on this topic, I'd rather download the image showing some wear and tear.drjohncarpenter wrote:It appears mine is uncropped and better quality. He sure looks great.

I'd rather see more of the image, which looks just fine from here. Glad you enjoyed my posting it.

Re: Elvis --> Set to Board, September 22, 1958 !
Nice photo for sure, but the version JamesVRoy posted has far more detail than yours even if it's in pretty rough condition. As they appear on this page your image looks compressed, pixelated and very low resolution albeit without physical damage. If you have the image in better resolution than what you've posted here, I might agree with your assessment.drjohncarpenter wrote:HungerMoon wrote:drjohncarpenter wrote:It appears mine is uncropped and better quality. Re: Elvis --> Set to Board, September 22, 1958 !
Heritage auctions listed another example, with a May 1958 date stamp and autograph. The auction description states that the photo is from May 1958 at an army base (fort hood days). Now we know the photo is pre USS Randall and makes sense as it was taken in what appears to be an army base store.
The link below shows the auction.

Interesting. Here is what the page says:A1elvisfan wrote:Heritage auctions listed another example, with a May 1958 date stamp and autograph. Viewing the full image one may more clearly observe the piping on the ceiling, which would seem out of place on a ship; so perhaps this is from May 1958, at Fort Hood in Kileen, TX.Elvis Presley Signed Black and White Snapshot, 1958. An original print depicting Elvis, circa Fort Hood, Texas days in uniform standing among other soldiers in what appears to be an ARMY base facility. The date stamp on the right border (from when the photograph was developed) reads "May 1958," verso is signed in blue ballpoint ink "Elvis Presley." (Please note there are numerous wrinkles on the surface, the lower right corner is missing, there is a fold mark on the left side, and both the front and back show yellowing due to age.) 3.5" x 5". COA from Rich Consola.
If anyone can confirm this, I'll update my topic and title.

Medals and bars show up on Elvis's uniform front left shirt pocket on all other sept photos including u s s Randall images. The other May &June fort hood elvis uniform photos are without medals & bars.

Re: Elvis --> At Fort Hood, May 1958 !
Maybe we can narrow it down a bit more.
I´m not a military man at all so maybe this doesn´t mean anything at all but Elvis doesn´t have the Hell on Wheels sign on his army uniform.
Wouldn´t that indicate that the photo was taken prior to May 17, 1958 where the sign shows in the photos with Anita Wood.
Sincerely
Brian

Good point, further it was taken before finger injury on May 16 1958.

Re: Elvis --> At Fort Hood, May 1958 !
I think this would be in the Post Exchange at Fort Hood. Note the tobcco products on the shelves behind Elvis and the other men.

Elvis Presley was an explorer of vast new landscapes of dream and illusion. He was a man who refused to be told that the best of his dreams would not come true, who refused to be defined by anyone else's perceptions. This is the goal of democracy, the journey on which every American hero sets out. That Elvis made so much of the journey on his own is reason enough to remember him with the honor and love we reserve for the bravest among us. Such men made the only maps we can trust.

Re: Elvis --> At Fort Hood, May 1958 !
The topic titles have changed, and changed again. Which is it?
I'll say this: he looks like he lost quite a bit of weight since he first went in. The uniform is too plain, without the later trimmings. So, that definitely sets it earlier. But he sure lost a lot of weight in that time!
So, has this been settled? Definitely? It's interesting because if it was developed in May, then he lost a lot of weight, very quickly. In May, he was still living on base (though I think Eddie Fadal had already given him a retreat which he often used). But, until his folks came, he didn't look like he was eating much: bad food, and not happy. That would account for it, if it was taken early.
Could someone please confirm, because the topic title kept changing, and I'm not sure when it was taken, and it's of significance. Not major significance, but it does tells a bit about what it was like early on, if this was taken by May.
Thanks. Great post, Doc! I like your photo; I guess maybe you re-uploaded, because it's very clear, and hi-res. (I would need at least a couple hours with it to try to get some of those bad scratches out, non-destructively, so I won't touch it right now. Had a long day. Might take much more than a couple hours, actually. Why would someone treat such a photo so badly?)
rjm (I just saw that auction. It said $20,000!!!!!! )

Re: Elvis --> Set to Board, September 22, 1958 !
Thanks for posting this article. According to the photographer the photo was taken at the USS Randal in Sept 58, which proofs to be incorrect.thefunkyangel wrote:I uploaded this years ago! It's on board in the canteen! Unsure what date it is from, but nonetheless, it's a great rare photo! Cheers!
Looking at the photo into more detail, it is interesting to notice that Elvis is wearing a little band aid on his right pink (due to injury on May 16th)
see also: http://www.elvis-collectors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=50609
Since the band-aid around his pink nail is much smaller than the taped finger from May 17th, it seems that the photo was taken at least a few days later.
Therefore I think the photo is from the last week or 10 days of May 1958
Please do not thank me--- Thank Elvis for making THIS happen.

Well, I got confused. I can see that now, but when I first saw it, I saw Ft. Hood, and then it said "Set to Board," and then it was back to "Ft. Hood." That's the way it appears, so I got confused.drjohncarpenter wrote:Neither.rjm wrote:The topic titles have changed, and changed again. Which is it?
