Elvis and Colonel Parker receiving trendsetter award

Tue Oct 27, 2009 8:32 am

Does anyone know of any photos of Elvis and Colonel receiving Billboard's trendsetter award in 1974?
They were both awarded this honor because of 1973's Aloha from Hawaii.

Here´s the photo from Paul´s Candid Central:

Paul has dated this August ´73, but actually this is from February ´74.

Not sure about the exact date, but was presented during the first Vegas season in 1974 and
issued in Billboard early February.

Don't know whetever happened to my input from last night but I had these photos dated as being from prior to the closing show on Feb 9, 1974.

However, since the Billboard article from E-Cat (thanks a lot) is dated Feb 9 it obviously is from an earlier date.

You're welcome!

Though the article was published Feb 9th, it seems that the news deadline for this publication was Feb 1st (all articles in this Billboard Mag issue seem to be from Jan 31st or before). Therefor I assume that the Trendsetter Award photo was also taken before Feb 1st; somewhere between Jan 26th (opening show) and Jan 31st perhaps?

E - Cat, thankyou for narrowing down the dates. It's always damn good to put a time and a place to a photograph! Cheers!

I totally agree with Funky.
Thanks a lot E-Cat for narrowing down the date.
Do we know which suits Elvis wore at this Las Vegas season?? We might be able to pinpoint the date even more.

Sincerely

He wore that suit on the 30th Jan 74, which seems to fit with everything else we've discussed.

Phil Gelormine from Billboard Magzine was directly responsible for presenting Elvis with Billboard's 1973 Trendsetter Award for "Aloha" which Elvis accepted in Las Vegas in January of 1974.

As Phil expleaned to me
Yup, Robert, that's the picture that broke my heart. I fought long and hard to have Elvis receive that award. Lobbied night and day. I finally convinced them of the his historical importance of "Aloha". They finally caved under one stipulation. And I'll never forget this: "If we give Elvis this Award," they told me, "we give it to Col. Parker as well." Deal. Of course they flew rock ' roll hater, straight-laced John Sippel to present it to him. Why fly me from New York. Bottom line? The King deserved it but it would have been a hell of an honor if I could have presented it to him in person. "My" Award to Elvis

One more thing, Robert, I called Mr. Sippel later that morning as he was back in our L.A. offices and asked him what Elvis was like when he gave him the Trendsetter Award. "We'll Phil, I'll tell you," he said very haultingly, although he was appreciative, he seemed to me to be a little, ummm somewhat...oh, maybe just a tad...sort of ...well you know". I never did push him to tell me what he was getting at. Draw your own conclusions

You guys have very short memories.

I posted a topic on this about three years ago. In fact, one of my images appears in stayawayjoe001's post above:

Billboard - February 9, 1974

Here's a new image, at least to my eyes. It appears that Elvis got a lot of his PR work done at the beginning of an engagement, so he could relax and just focus on the upcoming shows.

It's unclear which day in January or February the photo was captured.

Here's another version, cropped differently:

The part about Phil Gelormine's efforts to get this for Elvis was new to me, though.
