2 february 1973 - Midnight show. Elvis did this show or not? Please, read the attached e-mail I sent some times ago to a well know collector. He do not answer, because he say he's sure the show on both Madison label cds DON'T THINK TWICE and HILTON DOUBLE SHOT are from that very date/hour just because anothere BIG said so. May you take a look at my below considerations:
Recently Madison label did issue a cd called A HILTON DOUBLE SHOT, with a show firstly published on "Don't Think Twice" (reference 29 january 1973 Dinner Show). Now they say that Jan. 29 date MAY BE incorrect (that’s what they wrote in the inlay cover) so they say it’s actually from from Las Vegas 2 february 1973 Midnight Show.
I made some considerations:
1) We understood that on 31 january Elvis did not feel so well so he made to the hospital and cancelled Midnight Show (and maybe also the dinner as stated on Lee Cotten's "All Shook Up").
2) On Elvis News Service Weekly #94 Rex Martin did state that he made Vegas on february 10 and on route he was told that 3 midnight shows were cancelled up to 9 february (he suppose 31 january, 1 february and 3 february).
3) Rocky Barra's "Strictly Elvis" of 1973 state that "due to illness, during the season Elvis cancelled several MIDNIGHT shows".
4) Now we have both 3 february shows on cds (“Vegas Rhythm”, Gravel Road Music GRCD 7303, dinner show - “I’ll Remember You”, Follow That Dream 40711, midnight show).
5) Unfortunately I can't remeber where and when I collect the witness of such James Hunt who stated he made Vegas on february 2, sees the dinner show and when (hours later) he come back for the Midnight show he realize it was cancelled.
6) I finally read infos on TKC site as follow "and also Ernst has told me that the bootleg "Don't Think Twice" is actually from February 2nd Midnight show, and is not from January 29th Dinner show, as it is listed! He told me that on the Colonels request three shows were recorded - Midnight on the 2nd, and both shows on the 3rd. (There is paperwork to support this). Additionally both shows on the 4th were recorded - but only the instrumental parts. What other shows exist from this engagement in the vaults are audience (Sound Booth) recordings". I checked Joe Tunzi's book "Sessions III": on page 556 is printed the list of the concerts (cassettes - reel to reel) in the RCA vaults: he state that they recorded both shows from february 2 (DS on reel to reel and MS on cassettes), but nothing from february 3th (we have both on cds). I also notice that the only season where you can find uncertain dates is just the jan/feb 1973 (I assume because of several shows cancelled, other done while it was almost sure Elvis would not perform, so the engineers made confusion themselves).
Now, what I suppose is:
a) Elvis was sick (see 31 january - item 1) so he went to the hospital. Doctors advise him not to perform both show for some days, in order to recover.
b) He cancel both shows (but we're not sure about it) on 31, then he slow down the following days (startin’ on 1 february).
c) Rex said (item 2) three shows were cancelled (31/1 - 1/2 and 3/2) but we have both shows from 3/2.
d) Hunt said he was on the dinner show of 2/2 and found out that they eventually cancel the midnight show.
e) So it sound that he actually recover also on february 2 and so that the show on Hilton Double Shot is eventually from dinner show and not midnight show of february 2 (wrongly dated - see item 6 engineers).
Can we believe this reconstruction?
Is there somebody out there that has TRUE evidences?
Thanks.
Sebastiano
