Anyone familiar with TV production knows that camera, light and microphone rehearsals are crucial, especially if the segment to be taped is considered "informal." Recording the rehearsal was the least of their concerns prior to the 6:00 PM performance.
Engineer Bones Howe told me himself that his only concern, in the short, late-afternoon window he had, was to make sure that the stage audio was well-balanced. In addition, he would not have the luxury of a stereo sound picture to utilize because RCA refused to apply enough money to the budget to fulfill the request.
